Keeping computerized sewing machine on or off

I am sure it has been discussed in the past, but I really like to have your input. Do you leave your computerized sewing machine on or off if you stop sewing for a few minutes to do pressing or some additional cutting? Thanks for your replies.

patsan 07-19-2017 11:20 AM

On. I turn it off when I am finished sewing what needs to be done. Most times if I have been sewing and then need to make dinner and I know I will finish the sewing after dinner, I will turn it off, but every once in a while I see I forget to.

QuiltnNan 07-19-2017 11:22 AM

i leave mine on for short periods of inactivity. if it's going to be hours, i turn it off. just the way i was trained, i guess

Trapunta 07-19-2017 12:03 PM

I agree with patsan and QuiltnNan. I leave it on for brief breaks (1/2 hour or less), and turn it off for long ones.

cashs_mom 07-19-2017 01:44 PM

Same here. I leave it on, but if I'm going to go do something else then I turn it off. And, I always unplug it when I'm done with it just in case.

meyert 07-19-2017 02:37 PM

when I turn my machine on I usually leave it on for the day if I am working on something all day. It will be on without sewing for 15 minutes to an hour depending on what I am doing. When I think I am calling it a day then I shut it off

I do the same.

lynnie 07-19-2017 02:47 PM

same here. when i'm done, i'm done. if i'm working on something and need to iron, I leave it on, and go back.

My Bernina has a Eco button that puts the machine to sleep and saves whatever was set. A very nice feature so you don't have to reset stitch and needle position every time you leave the machine for other tasks.

MadQuilter 07-19-2017 03:25 PM

Mine stays on. It has an auto shutoff feature.

My Janomes are the same, they go to sleep.

If I know it will be longer than 20 min. I will turn it and the light that is next to it off.

My Bernina has that also. The only problem with it is that I look at the machine and think it's turned off so I forget to turn it off when I'm done. I'm a doofus that way so I don't often use the eco button and when I do I put a post it over the screen saying "ECO ON!"

Onebyone 07-19-2017 05:29 PM

I usually turn off my machines when I'm done for the day. I have several set up ready to use and I turn them all on when I go in my sewing room.

Dolphyngyrl 07-19-2017 10:42 PM

I leave mine on it has an auto shut off feature you can program the length of time before shut off

Murphy224 07-20-2017 01:49 AM

I turn mine off when I am done for the day. It has a sleep feature but there is a design on the screen that tells me it is still on. Mine is plugged into a good surge protector so I don't unplug and have had no problems with power outages. Even though one happened in the middle of a seam once. I just flipped the on/off switch and waited till the power came back on. All was good.

mermaid 07-20-2017 03:01 AM

I have the combo machines--one I sew and the other I emb. I "too frequently" forget and they stay on all night. I've even been known to put the cover on and forget to turn off. Next day it is quite warm inside the cover--the light, I suppose. Call me doofus also, or loony tunes, or double klutzy!

quilterpurpledog 07-20-2017 03:09 AM

I leave mine on all the time I am in my sewing room. I also leave the iron on; it has the auto shut off so it goes on and off. I do not think it is harmful in any way to do this and certainly aids productivity not to have to be turning things, including lights, off and on.

Linda1 07-20-2017 05:12 AM

I leave mine on all the time I am in the sewing room. I have every machine and iron plugged into surge protectors and turn them off when I am done for the day.

NJ Quilter 07-20-2017 05:44 AM

I leave my computerized machine on for the duration of time that I have to spend on a given project. I may be ironing; answering phones; replying to emails during that time as well as sewing. When I know I'm done for the day/evening then I'll turn off the machine. Otherwise it's on for (relatively) short inactive periods. Like most electronics, it takes more power to turn on/off the given machine than the power you are saving by turning it off.

I even (gasp!) leave my computerized machine plugged in to it's surge protector when there is an electrical storm! Knock wood...we've never had an issue with lightening affecting any equipment in our home in the 27+ years I've lived here, nor has DH in the years prior to that.

bibi 07-20-2017 06:35 AM

Thank you for all of your replies. This really helps. Thanks!

Sewnoma 07-20-2017 06:44 AM

If I'm in the room I leave it on, but if I'm going to leave the room I turn everything off, because I am prone to being distracted and before I know it, it'll get left on all night.

I have my sewing machine, lights, and iron all on switches that are controlled by my Alexa. I can turn things on and off individually with my voice, and I have grouped all of them together in a group named "Everything" - so when I'm leaving the room I can just say, "Alexa, turn off everything" and the whole room gets shut down. I love it, it's so "Star Trekky".

I don't unplug my machine, but I have it on an expensive surge protector AND a UPS ("uninterruptible power supply" - basically a battery back-up and power "cleaner") so it is very unlikely my machine would get hit by surge. I want to get a whole-house surge protector added at the box; I hear they are not very expensive and I like as many layers of insurance as I can get!

eastslopequilter 07-20-2017 08:43 AM

A sewing machine repairman told our guild of a computerized machine left unplugged on a serge protector that blew the serge protector and the sewing machine during a lightning storm. I leave my machine on when I am making something, but always unplug it at night or if there is a thunder storm coming.

Innov8R 07-20-2017 09:58 AM

My machine is a Janome MC 14000 that can be set to power down after a specified number of minutes has passed without activity, so I wouldn't need to turn it off for pressing or pinning, etc. However, I turn it off when I leave the studio.

petthefabric 07-20-2017 10:09 AM

Surge protectors are for different voltages. We got several very high voltage protectors. Put them on TV, PC, microwave, sewing machines. A tree fell on a line during a storm and fryed everything in the house; phones, clocks, micro, tv,etc.... The whole house surge protector would have made a difference.

Same with the ECO button

Macybaby 07-20-2017 01:24 PM

For those that unplug, do you unplug from the machine side or the wall side?

Becky's Crafts 07-20-2017 03:50 PM

I will leave mine on while I do a quick press, but when I'm done for the day or a longer period of time I shut it off and unplug it because we have a lot of thunder and lightening storms here in Florida & I wouldn't be able to afford another nice machine like this one!

Reba'squilts 07-21-2017 04:38 AM

I leave mine on when I am working with it, sometimes leave on when I go up to make the munchkins lunch. Off at night. I do unplug iron every time I step away...heard all the rowenta stories! I wonder, does the machine "count" the time it is on or the actual sewing time?

Snooze2978 07-21-2017 08:18 AM

I leave mine on for hours at a time, even when I know I won't be back for maybe an hour or more. Doesn't seem to hurt it but of course the machine has one of those "machine hours" so its not really exact in how many hours I'm on it but I don't care that much about that.

susie-susie-susie 07-21-2017 08:52 AM

I turn mine off--don't like to because I have to change the stitch length and any other settings that I have changed. Don't have a eco mode.
Sue

Thanks again, you are all so kind and knowledgeable.

SusieQOH 07-21-2017 10:22 AM

I turn my Bernina off but it never occurred to me to unplug it. Good idea!

running1 07-22-2017 11:35 AM

How many times have I dashed upstairs when hearing thunder to make SURE my machine is unplugged.... I REALLY try to unplug anymore... I want to keep this machine for a long time!! (don't trust those surge protectors, I guess...)

I had that problem too. After I plugged it into a power strip along with several lights it will go off with the lights.

fish92241 07-26-2017 02:08 PM

I turn mine off. Also, I turn off the power supply, either at the plug or on the surger connection
