Kona Solids
There is a great sale at one of my LQS's and I bought fabrics needed to complete projects. This is not the first time I buy Kona Solids and each time I use them I think how much I really really like working with this fabric. Who all have used Kona Solids? How do you like it?
I consider it a 'sturdy' fabric - I think it's unwieldy for detailed applique work.
I love the Kona solids. I am making a "modern" quilt using them and love the feel and look of them. I am taking a class on modern quilting and think I will be purchasing more and more Kona solids. They work perfect with modern quilting.
I keep at least 2 yds of 5-6 Konas for certain projects. Like Bearisgray it is sturdy and sometimes harder to use when appliquing. But great fabric for borders and sashing.
Of course, no offense, but Moda solids are my favorite overall solid to use for backing, etc. |

I also prefer Moda, but Kona is definitely good. For applique, I prefer batiks.
I love Kona solids
Buy them from fabric.com |
In the past, I noticed that there was dye lot variation in the colors. That may not be so any more - but it's a good idea to get as much as you need of one color from the same bolt.
I use Kona white quite a bit. Compared to some fabrics .. its has a really nice weight.

I have several Kona solids and I like them. Sometimes, I'd prefer something a tad lighter weight.
Moda Solids are my favorite but I do use and have been happy with Kona.
I buy black and snow by the bolt when Hancocks of Paducah has free shipping. Quite a nice discount when you order a large quantity.
I just ordered a Kona 1/2 yard bundle with 10 different new kona colors - I have a quilt pattern picked out for it - the pattern is by Jaybird Quilts - its called Northern Lights and uses her new ruler - can't wait to do this one.
I like the Kona solids, but my local JoAnn's has a very limited selection - just a couple of blues and I understand that there are lots of blue shades out there.
Kona's my favorite for solid backgrounds. After pre-washing it's wonderful to work with. I do buy it online in the $5-6 range as most of my LQS's have it for the same price as their prints.
I love Kona cotton for background fabric. I have used quite a lot of it and have been pleased with the way my finished quilts looked.

Our local quilt guild uses Kona snow (which we call "Club Cream") as our signature fabric. It's used in our "thinking of you" and "going away" blocks and occasionally in guild challenges.
I've used Kona solids for over 20 years and have always loved them for their dense saturation of color, particularly the black - which I call a "patent leather black" because it has a slight shine and is soooo black. I love it! I don't do much applique, though, and suspect if might be a bit "sturdy" as Bearisgray mentioned. I buy mine from Hancocks of Paducah. This quilt used Kona as the background and the colors are much more pronounced than the photo shows. Jan in VA |
Kona cottons are the only solids that I use. I buy red ,white and black by the bolt. It is wonderful for Hawaiian needleturn designs.
Kona solids...I even bought the color chart! Love 'em!:thumbup:
I also love the Kona solids. I always keep a good supply of assorted colors on hand. They are great for childrens crib/lap quilts. A great quality fabric.
I like Kona solids for backing. It has a nice weight ans comes in many colors. I get it at Hobby Lobby for 30% off so tyhe price is right!!!
I love Kona solids. A couple of years ago I bought a bolt of parchment and a bolt of black. I have gone through both of those. It worked out so well that I bought another bolt of each.
I just bought some Moda that was made for the Quilt Across Texas Shop Hop and I have never bought a fabric that raveled so much. Its hand is wonderful, but I'm afraid it will be frayed away before I get it to the long armer. froggyintexas

Another vote for Moda Bella here. I'm currently working on a king size clamshell quilt made of nothing but Moda Bella solids, and it is gorgeous, if I do say so myself.
eta: not one single problem with unraveling or fraying. Maybe Moda changed the recipe. |
I always keep Kona Black on hand and usually buy it 4 yds at a time. I get mine at Hobby Lobby. I machine applique and don't have a problem with it at all.
I use it. Hancock Fabric has it on sale for 20% of this week.
Jan..Love that quilt!!!!
I like Kona solids and I also use Bella solids by Moda. The Bella fabrics have a much smoother feel.
I'm using it now for a quilt with only solid blocks and am happy with it. I did get a chance to feel Bella solids the other day and they are super soft. I will probably try it next time I need solids.
I prefer Kona for any solids in a quilt. I incorporate embroidery into quite a few of my quilts and I have 3 favorite colors for the embroidery (depending on the overall design) White, Snow and eggshell.

Anyone knows where to get Kona solid charm packs? Thanks.

I'm using Kona Cotton for a quilt for my youngest son. He is kind of hard on things so I think the Kona will be sturdier because it has a little bit heavier feel.

I like the Kona fabrics. I am running low and need to stash rebuild on my solids and they will be my go to solids.
I love Kona too, except I hate when I'm not quick enough getting it out of the dryer...when it wrinkles it wants to STAY wrinkled!
Kona black is the only fabric I've ever bought by the bolt. |
I like the hand on the Moda's Bella solids better and have had no unraveling on the 20 yards I just had delivered last week and I have really cut into that to add to different kits I am getting ready. With hundreds of choices, I have always found the color/shade I wanted. My favorite right now is the Zen gray, I just purchased another four yards for an Ashbury fat quarter pack I just purchased, it is awesome. I use Moda's Bella solids much more than the Kona, expect for the black. That Kona black is black and it stays that way, I guess I have been lucky with all the different bolts I have purchased from over the last three years, it has always been the same black dye.

That's still true...sometimes it's very different indeed. My new favorites are RJR Cotton Supreme and P&B Color Spectrum. Both have a much nicer hand than Kona, as does Moda Bella.

Oh I see the Kona color card at Hancocks. That is really useful, especially when ordering online.
