label

Honest opinion, please. Do you think this label is too big for quilt? It's 17 inches across and 13 on sides. It will be stitched on sides within binding and blind stitched on top, but will be loose on the rest. Will it look okay after many washings? Thanks for responses and opinions.

I think I would stitch it in several places in the middle, not all the way through the quilt but into the backing so it won't be baggy
I'd stitch it down across the top. you could quilt thru it.
I have made big labels too. one was of a kitten in a pirate ship with a parrot. it came out cute. |
I would love to see the front! Grey, white and pink is soooo pretty!
To answer your question, for me the label is rather large ... but I see you are from Texas and I hear everything is larger in Texas. Haha. I actually like the triangled shape. I would sew all sides. Very pretty BTW.

good label.
It seems rather large to me but mine tend to be on the small side compared to some I've seen.
It looks fine. I can't see the proportions compared to the quilt, but it's not 1/4 the size of the quilt, and it looks good. Besides, the Texas thing! :)
Not too large at all. It makes the quilt extra special.
I think it is just fine. Mine are 6 x 9 inches on every quilt I make except for the very small wall hangings.
I think it is wonderful
There is nothing "wrong" with your label. It makes your quilt even more special. If you like it, go with it. Because of the size, I would stitch it across the diagonal side just to hold it in place. Carefully stitch by hand so none of your stitches show through on the front. Even after many washes, it will be there to remind the recipient just how special she is.
In my humble opinion it's too big. The largest one I've ever done is about 5 1/2" x 8 1/2"...being too large takes away from the actual quilt.
It may be a little big but I would hand stitch (like binding) the long edge of this label to the quilt. You don't want dust bunnies to get into the opening!

When I do a label that is incorporated into the binding/edge, I use binding along the free edge, fold it over just like all binding, and sew that down to the quilt as well.

I usually make my labels 5" to 8", so by that standard this one is big. All that matters is that you like it. It will be very legible. I agree with those who say to sew or tack it down in a couple of places in the middle so that it won't be baggy
If you're worried about the label bagging after many washings you might think about using a double-sided interfacing to tack it down. I also use a triangle shaped label but not quilt that large. I have a template in my Embird program that I add all my lettering into, then stitch a one-sided iron-on interfacing to tack down the edge that will be handstitched as the other 2 sides will be stitched along with the binding.
I agree with Kathy that you should stitch it down in several places in the middle just to be on the "safe side", and you don't have to go all the way through the quilt, although it could be additionally attached by quilting over it.
The label is a design element, and the pink is a bright spot! I don't think I'd change it.

This would be a good size label to put on before quilting, since it is probably large enough to remain legible even when quilted over. For this one, I agree that it would be a good idea to take some stitches inside the label to keep it anchored.

Bonnie Hunter makes triangle labels too. I would definitely blind stitch the diagonal side being careful to catch just the lining.
I was originally thinking it would be good to stitch through the middle of the tag, but then realized that if you went all the way through, you would have a random diagonal line on the front of your quilt. If you can manage to do a running stitch just into the batting below Scarlett's name, that would be ideal. Otherwise, my opinion is that it's just a label -- if someday it starts to get baggy, then you can always unsew & replace it.
Another option to consider is using a small amount of fusible web or Fabric Fusion (permanent glue) to fuse the fabric in a few places to the backing. If you do that, I'd make sure to run it in a very straight line -- or apply all over -- because otherwise you'll end up with pulls and puckers. |

Well, I decided to make another label, although I still like the other one, but felt it might be a little big. So here is the finished product ready to be gifted. Making burp cloths now. Oh, forgot to say I did use monof. thread in bobbin and locked a few threads throughout label to hold it down. Can't really tell unless you actually hold it close and look for it. I do hate sewing with that thread though, but did come in handy this time.
