I like to make mine 60" long and 45" wide, My husband even likes his a bit longer, I guess it depends on the persons size.

The one I am making will be abou 63 by 62. All the material I have as it is made from old men's shirts.

i have a kit for lap size that states 72x72 from connecting threads

I guess it depends on who/what it's for.
When my mom was making "lap quilts" as a charity project for nursing homes, they were approximately 36 x 45. I think they were mainly to cover people's legs and laps when they were in wheelchairs. If they were too big, they got caught in the wheelchair wheels. |

But they were supposed to be big enough to tuck around their laps. A 36 x 36 would be about a lap napkin for me. :?
