I have one of these too, bought used and I love it. I like that the throat area is tall vs. wide. Probably same amount of square inches compared to a machine that is longer and flatter, but, I like the space arrangement better. I can get a pretty big quilt done under it. Working from the center out makes it easier with a big quilt.

I have the Janome 1600P on a quilting frame. It's strickly straight stitch, forward, backward, drop needle, etc....nothing fancy but it does the most beautiful quilting. Either an 11 or 12 inch throat. Bought it from Sewing Machines Plus and paid cash for mine but you can you can get credit from them and make payments. Wouldn't trade it for anything.

I have a new Babylock Jazz with a 12" throat. Bought for $699 this past May (brand new with "special" offer from Babylock...check their website for deals before going to the dealer!) which was just about 1/2 price. Only drawbacks of the machine: no speed control except with the foot pedal, no needle up/down. Other than that, I LOVE my new machine. I looked into the Brother and the Juki, but the local dealers would not allow me to test drive without buying first with no return! No thank you! Babylock dealer let me sit and "play" for as long as I wanted. Great service and really great dealer.

On Allbrands site, You can get a Grace company Q'nique for about $3500. That includes the table for it. The harp is 15" x 9". Lots of throat space for the money.

Happy hunting.

I have a Viking Mega Quilter, which is no longer produced. It is basically the same as the Juki. Only sews straight but can sew pretty fast or slow. It's not the width of the throat, about 10", but the height also that really helps get those large quilts in there. It has served me well. I easily quilted an oversized king without a problem. The secret is to have a large enough table to rest the quilt on while you work.
