I use a knife edge to finish the edges. I guess I'm just old fashioned but this is the way my grandmother taught me and I really like the effect.

OK. How do you birth a quilt. Never heard this term before. Sure does make you conjure up some funky ideas!

Thank you all for helping me understand this. I just couldn't get it straight in my mind. I like making hexes while watching baseball. I am a big Tiger fan. I just sewed some hexes together to experiment with what to do with the sides. Now I can try several different methods. In about two years I may be able to post some pictures but until then I will keep on sewing.
GO TIGERS! What a wonderful way to double dip. Tigers and a quilt both at the same time. |
WMUT each,
Here is how I birth a quilt: front and back -rightsides together-add batting-sew around the edgewhile leaving opening to turn. After turning, I sew around the edge about .5 of an inch. Quilt as you want. Mostly I do this for baby/toddler quilts because they get a lot of wear. Wishing you the best. |

I use the Japanese method by making a mini sandwich with each hexie and then sewing them together. That way, the quilting is finished as you go.

Time to turn your auto-correct off! |
To birth a quilt, I put the batting on the back of the quilt flimsy. Then I make the backing and lay the batting, quilt flimsy down right side up and then lay the backing right side down. I sew about a half an inch all around the quilt except for 10 inches. Then I reach in the hole and pull everything through it and poke the corners out nicely. I iron the quilt well and then quilt it all over. This way you don't have to do the edges with binding. It's great for kids quilts!

Birth as above, but before turning right side out trim backing, batting...I trim backing fab about 1/4", and carefully trim batt to about 1/8", less bulk that way.....a quick way to do small things too.
