HOW SILLY. I'm messing around with hexes I had made and decided to put them together. That done now how to put the backing on it? Do you birth it? I can't find anything that tells me what to do now. Help please. I'm starting a Grandmother Garden to have something to do while watching TV. Sure don't want to birth that.

Often, they are either birthed, or finished with a facing ( strip sewn to edge, then turned).

Depending on the size you have now, I think I might try taking a co-ordinating fabric, cutting nice sized width by the length you need, and then applique the hexies onto the border piece. Then you can finish it with a binding if you want.

I use to curve the edges (this was the traditional layout), cut bias binding and sew the it to the front then turn it to the back to hand stitch. A photo would help us with the advice.

Thank you all for helping me understand this. I just couldn't get it straight in my mind. I like making hexes while watching baseball. I am a big Tiger fan. I just sewed some hexes together to experiment with what to do with the sides. Now I can try several different methods. In about two years I may be able to post some pictures but until then I will keep on sewing.

I use the Japanese method by making a mini sandwich with each hexie and then sewing them together. That way, the quilting is finished as you go.

I applique my sixty degree stars onto a border strip and then treat as any other quilt, by adding an outer border and quilting as usual. Quilting on the Go by Jessica Alexandrakis has some great suggestions for finishing your hand pieced quilts. I've noticed they now have her book at JAF.
