On the back of the cardboard backing the layer cake, it shows cutting options. I saw someone cut half of hers vertically and horizontally (squares) and she made 4-patches, then she cut half of them diagonally in both directions which she turned into hourglass shapes. Each block was 2 colors. She then alternated the 4-patch and hourglass blocks. The quilt was beautiful. By the way, both block types turned out the same size which made them easy to go together.

Any charm square pattern or layer cake pattern would work. A layer cake cut in quarters yields 4 charm packs. I just completed at Disappearing 4-Patch, using 3 charm packs and an equal number of white squares, and it finished at 57" x 71".

I used a layer cake to make "urban cabin" by Atkinson Designs. Got lots of complements on it.
sorry don't know how to upload photo so you can see what it looks like

I agree with soccertxi about the double pinwheel 2 quilt. I am cutting my own scraps into 9 1/2" squares for mine. Love the MQC and Jenny for giving us such neat patterns.

Sorry about the long link! I worked on it for 15 mins! How about a Disappearing pinwheel from MSQC? Here is a picture of the ones I did for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge. There is also another way to set these from the same pinwheel. It looks more like a Churn Dash with a pinwheel center.

Jenny Doan has many YouTube videos using layer cakes. This one, the Disappearing pinwheel is awesome!! If I were you, I would watch the video and make this quilt. You will need background fabric. She usually buys a 2nd layer cake that is white or cream to make her quilts. For this quilt, a second background layer cake would be perfect or you can just cut 10" squares out of background fabric. This block goes together very fast. You could make the quilt in a day, if you spent all day working on it. Me, it takes longer because I don't spend all day sewing. Good luck!

This pattern isn't free, but uses a layer cake. I made it and it was very easy!

I was thinking about signing up for the February Layer Cake swap. Now with all these great ideas with what to do with them I am going to have to go home and check my stash to see if I have enough batikes to do this.
