Layout question, D4P
1 Attachment(s)
My DH met some of his birth siblings about 3 years ago. And one has become my best friend and sister i never had. She is amazing taking care of a moody teen boy who found girls exist and a kindergardener who is special. She puts them all first and never utters a squeak of negativity or weakness. Hubby drives trucks so he isnt often home. She never asked for a quilt but recently said that she considered anyone worthy of a handmade gift as being very loved indeed.
i have collected these fabrics over a year for her, but until the recent swap of a D4P twist i was stumped what pattern to do. So saturday i ironed and cut, sunday I sewed and pressed and still have 20 blocks to go. The question i have, sashing or abutted? |
I like it without sashing...gives it a nice lattice look to me.
Either. But for size you might prefer sashing as well as a border.
The quilt is very pretty! How special of you to give this to her. Jan in VA |
I have plenty of fabric to make this any size i want, and for borders and flanges. I am open to rolling them onto points for something different.
I'm no help but it's going to be beautiful whatever you do! She'll love & appreciate it!
I think I would like it with sashing to show each block. but it would look good either way. Try some with a sashing and some without. See which way appeals to you.
I love your picture, by sewing the blocks together it creates another dimension of diagonal lines. A thin yellow border and then a thicker border of blue perhaps would complete this quilt beautifully IMHO of course :)
I vote for sashing with a high contrast color to make the individual blocks stand out. I love what you have so far. Pls post again after you decide how to finish it so we can see your progress.
Lovely blocks, your sister in law will feel the love! IMHO I think a deep blue for sashing would be perfect, then a narrow deep yellow border and another wider border in either deep blue, or scrappy with deep blue.
I'm also really liking the lattice effect of the blocks touching, but whatever you decide will look beautiful. Love the colors you chose!
i vote for sashing, but abutted is nice too
I usually do sashing but I really like what you have posted. I think I would sew them the way they are and add a nice big border.
I also like it without sashing, because of the lattice effect. But maybe that would also still happen with sashing...I can't really picture it in my mind. Maybe try laying it out with sashing and without and then decide which version you like best. :-)
I think I would add a darker blue sashing and yellow corner stones, just MHO
It is really pretty this way, but sashing might look good too. It would make the blocks stand out more. I love your color choices.
A very small sashing would set the blocks apart but not lose the lattice effect. I recently use a 1" strip between my blocks, finished 1/2", and liked the fine line separation. Love the blue and yellow combo!
Either would be beautiful.
Regardless of your final decision, please post pictures for us to see when you finish. It is going to be beautiful either way!
Whatever you decide, it will be a beautiful and very thoughtful gift of love!
Its going to be beautiful...I would add sashings in yellow, with blue corner stones and borders...Regardless of what you do its going to be awesome and she is going to LOVE it

Your colors are beautiful. Personally, I would like a narrow dark blue sashing that would set off the blocks. Your gift will be loved and appreciated whatever you decide.

I see on my computer a lot of purpley blues together, AND I LOVE THE LOOK. I feel if you sash it they may get lost from each other[the purpleyblues and the blues and yellows.]. But since the fabric is gorgeous, whatever you choose will be wonderful. I love it.
I agree with Tweety2911. Your quilt is going to be beautiful.
I did a D9P with sashing on point and really, really like the effect it has. Your quilt will be lovely however you do it. Such soft, pretty colors. A special gift for a special person from the way you describe her.
The quilt is a beauty with or without sashing. Sorry I am no help!!!!!!!!!!!
I prefer no shashing. It is lovely and will be a real surprise!
Your thoughtfulness to your "new" sister-in-law is loving and very special. I really love your quilt and its colors. That is an interesting way to cut a DP4. It will be beautiful any way you do it. Another thought might be to sew your units into groups of four and put a narrow sashing around each group. I would definitely use two borders around the outside to tie all the blue and yellow together. Just a thought.
I, too love what you have done already with the colors and pattern. I like it without the sashing, but would maybe audition it with a thin sashing on point. A very thoughtful gesture on your part!!!! I would love to have a sister type relationship!!!
I agree with Tweety2911. No smashing. The blocks abutted crate a wonderful effect. What a great story. Whatever you decide to do this quilt will be loved and greatly appreciated.
I like the lattice look too, BUT I think it would also be quite striking with sashing. Your preference I think. What a loving, amazing thing you are doing. She is definitely going to feel the love with your gift. Make sure we get to see the finished product.

Great job- beautiful quilt
I love this and that your are making this for her. I would vote on sashings to show off each block. All together is a little bit overwhelming (to me) but it is beautiful either way you go.
I love this block! the colors you are using are so pretty. She will feel the love! Now, can someone tell me where to find the directions for this block? I have a fat quarter bundle that would be pretty done with this. A sister-in-law has Lupus and I found the bundle, of purples/florals, perfect for her. I like the idea of grouping 4 blocks within a sashing. thanks!
I'd vote for small sashing in a darker blue. Maybe yellow corner stones..? Whatever you decide, it will be a wonderful gift for her!
I just finished a very similar top in lilac, yellow and green. I didn't but any sashing on the blocks, however I did add 2 borders and I do not like the borders at all. I will be getting using my trusty seam ripper and removing the borders this coming weekend. Very nicely done :)

Definitely agree. |
I like it without the sashing - looks like lattice. It's going to be a beautiful quilt and even more special to the recipient.
Oh, it's beautiful! Love the colors and fabrics so much! But I'm not much help because I think it will be great either way. Looks wonderful as is, but would also look terrific, I think, with solid gold or solid blue sashing between those blocks. When you decide, please show us!
No opinion but I loved your story. It's always a blessing when someone special comes along and finds a place in your life.
Usually I would automatically say sashing but I like the lattice effect you have. I guess it depends on how many blocks you have and how big you want the quilt.
You have done a great job and it will be a wonderful gift! |
