learned about Daily Deal.......

I, for the first time, was interested in the Missouri Star Quilt Co. daily deal......a really cute charm pack offered for a great price of 2.77....but I wanted more than just one pack, so I updated the invoice to show 3 and when I proceeded to checkout it showed one at sale price and two at regular.....I called store and was told yes, one can only order one of the specials all else of that item are at reg. price....so I cancelled order........sort of a downer......I think they should at least offer a minimum amount of product, say 2/3. What I wanted to do would have required more than one pack. Just wanted anyone out there who has not ordered from there to be aware of limitation of daily special...........now I know......

JulieR 02-08-2013 07:00 AM

Well, it is a loss leader. They don't make money on the one item, they make it on anything else you buy while you are there. Many of the daily deal items are things you'd only buy one of anyway, but it's still a great deal to buy a precut at a loss leader price and a second at a good price.

mandyrose 02-08-2013 07:23 AM

and $5.00 shipping on top of the deal $2.77

JulieR 02-08-2013 07:37 AM

For those who still want to profit from the Daily Deal, I would advise having a shopping list already prepared, in case a) something on your list shows up as a deal, or b) something else you want is the deal, and you can add items from your list to the deal purchase to save shipping.

BellaBoo 02-08-2013 07:45 AM

$5 shipping is for one or a hundred items. As JulieR says, make a list and when a daily deal you really want is available then buy what is on your shopping list too. I don't know why anyone would get sticker shock over $5 shipping. Some items cost less then the mailing cost and many cost more.

Gramie bj 02-08-2013 08:03 AM

I just wish they were not sold out by 8 AM my time. This happened to me on more than one occasion.

mike'sgirl 02-08-2013 08:25 AM

I love MSQC. Every time I have ordered from them, I have had my stuff the same week if I ordered early enough in the week. I always get a hand written note from Jenny, which I think is a great touch.
Also, I would much rather buy two charm packs, with one at a reduced rate, than two at the regular rate. Just my opinion. Gina

I think it's a reasonable shipping price, but sometimes when added to the Daily Deal, it makes it not such a deal. I've looked at a charm pack I really wanted that was a deal, but not when shipping was added. Then again, recently I got the titanium scissors for 50¢, and even with shipping it was a deal. And of course I added something more...:o

paulina 02-08-2013 09:01 AM

Well to be fair, they state in the description of the item that it is limited to 1, and state the price for any additional quantity. I have seen that every time. They aren't trying to be sneaky or anything. I've used the daily deal many many times, and even with shipping it is still a huge bargain for me. I would use way more than the $5 shipping in gas and other "gotta have it" items I would throw in my cart if I were in a brick and mortar store.

QuiltingHaven 02-08-2013 09:38 AM

My 2 cents. I love the fabric and the quality and cut is always perfect. I do try and keep a list but even if I buy 3 charm packs (1 on special, the others at reg price) and pay 5.00 shipping, it is a good buy for me, the nearest quality quilt shop is 20 minute- 30 minutes away and with gas at the price it is now, $5.00 is a good deal.

scisyb220 02-08-2013 10:13 AM

As paulina said, they clearly state that the Daily Deal is a limit of one, but additionally I must say I have always been exceedingly pleased with the customer service I have gotten from MSQC. Many times I've ordered the DD but added something else to the order because their price was so incredibly low. Just last week, I got an order of charms for $2 and when they were delivered, and extra set was also delivered in error to me. They told me just to keep them, it would be more expensive to ship them back or forward to the customer listed on the order form. I don't know about you, but a company that treats their customers like family is worth supporting, to me. I have never received an order from them that I've been disappointed in, either. Sorry you weren't happy with the conditions they place on the Daily Deal, but for me it's a winner all the time!

rush88888 02-08-2013 10:49 AM

you could have a friend or two order a set for you. gotta play the game!

kamaiarigby 02-08-2013 10:52 AM

I also saw a daily deal that I liked from MSQC, but for me the postage was $59.95 that makes a VERY expensive packet of charm squares. I read through their shipping instructions and even if I bought a packet of needles it was still $59.95.
In New Zealand we pay anything from $24-$30 per metre (1 yard 3 inches ) A number of international members of QB like me buy their fabrics from USA, but we do have to be careful and include the price of the postage etc to the total cost of our purchase.

Lori S 02-08-2013 11:07 AM

The daily deal really is a deal if you intend to buy more and the deal is just an add on.

maggiemuggins 02-08-2013 12:44 PM

I was a little put off by the shipping as well....I am in Canada and the shipping was pretty high...I love the tutorials and the presentation of the fabrics and the prices seem good but the shipping is just too high for me

quilter2090 02-08-2013 03:01 PM

I,too, was going to order a daily special, but with the $5.00 shopping I cancelled the order. I have found most of the daily specials are pre-cuts and since I don't buy pre-cuts, I haven't ordered from them.

Mdaniels 02-08-2013 03:57 PM

When I get the daily deal, I also look at the rest of the material on sale--I can usually find a couple of other nice charm packs around $5 and usually something else I need to make it worthwhile for me and MSQC!

franc36 02-08-2013 04:50 PM

Like JulieR, I have a shopping list by my computer. When I see a Daily Deal that I just can't live without, I order it and one or more things on my list. I have been extremely pleased with the service at MSQC and love ordering from them. To me the $5 postage is a great deal since I order more than one item.

meanmom 02-09-2013 04:57 AM

I have never done it from their website but when I want more than one of things like that I just send one to me. One to my daughter, one to my mom etc until I have enough.

RV Quilter 02-09-2013 05:36 AM

Love the MSQC daily deal...they specialize in precuts....If you order from other sites you will find that their $5 is a good shipping price for an order.

maryfrang 02-09-2013 05:39 AM

I just love the daily deal and also her tutorials. Several of use in our local quilt guild have joined forces and we also have very different tastes in fabric lines, we will buy for the deal for each other. We also will add the extra that we want off our individual lists. Even if I just buy a great deal, I am happy since there are no local shops that offer the pre cuts like MSQC.

duckydo 02-09-2013 05:49 AM

I love MSQC, they have wonderful tutorials

Longarm 02-09-2013 05:57 AM

I don't order often but really love the service and not only the daily deal prices but so many of the other products are a great price. Specially if you don't have to drive 50 to 100 miles each way, or more, and still not find what you really want but can have what you are looking for shipped for only $5.00! Thank you Jenny and staff!!

jeaninmaine 02-09-2013 06:04 AM

Sometimes the same one comes around again. I love their daily deal. Usually the price for the extra ones is a sale price, not as good as the price of the first one, but still on sale.

Geri B 02-09-2013 06:24 AM

Me again. Don't get me wrong....I have ordered from MSQ......yes, templates from their tutorials and I do love their products and their service cannot be beat.......it was just stupid me, I had never really paid attention to the DD, but that day, just was cruising around, saw it and did not read any further than the price and placed my order....and then cancelled.....now I will do as some have suggested here...make my list, keep it along side the comp and then place it when the DD is looking like something I really want. Yes, their shipping charge is very reasonable compared to others.....and I will continue to buy other things from them. BTW, in my last order from them I ordered the mag that I cannot find anywhere in my world...even my LQS did not know what I was talking about.......that seemed unusual to me, but anyway, I am now waiting anxiously for my package.....

Gail B 02-09-2013 06:26 AM

I love MSQC daily deals. Even if I don't order anything else at the time it's still a good deal for me.

cindyb 02-09-2013 07:01 AM

I get the Daily Deal and ALWAYS go in as a 'Daily Inspiration', but not only for the beautiful fabric suggestions - I LOVE the time they put into the little stories that personally apply to the Daily Deal.

Tigger 02-09-2013 07:13 AM

Many times I have seen where she tells you to 'put as many as you like in your cart' and that's a great deal. I have several of the DD's and need to come up with an idea to use them for. There are just so pretty I hate to cut into them.

I made three quilts for Christmas presents in 2012 using different patterns for each while letting Jenny guide me through the process with her tutorials. I was so pleased with them. The recipients were very thrilled as well, almost felt guilty taking the credit for them. I think Jenny is wonderful and is very genuine.

MarleneC 02-09-2013 07:23 AM

I have experienced the same thing. And, I won't pay $5 shipping on a $2.77 or even $10 item. And, I also think it would be nice if when they offered something I liked--say a charm pack -- if they would offer the layer cake or jelly roll of that pattern on a reduced price. That would make me more inclined to buy something.

JudyMcLeod 02-09-2013 08:10 AM

Yes, I found that out too and then when you add the cost of postage it really isn't a good deal. I agree with you.

Like many of you, I compare the postage to the cost of a trip to town: the gas used in driving 30 miles one way to the nearest hancock's (which doesn't have the same fabrics) and the inconvenience of getting dressed. Since I don't add my cost of the trip to town to cost of items I buy there, I don't add it to the cost of the ones I order. (which is one way of thinking of it), So $5.00 seems reasonable and convenient to me. Since they have the same postage no matter how much you buy, I usually add other needs/wants to the list. But I do see how you're thinking of it and if you're live close to stores them you going to the fabric stores anyway.

katkat1946 02-09-2013 12:01 PM

I remember feeling disappointed the first time I tried to order multiples of the daily deal but after thinking about it realized they couldn't stay in business if they let us all buy multiples at such a fantastic price!!! As I look through their shop I am stunned by the variety of merchandise they carry. Plus, Jenny's free videos are so amazing - we pay for that type of instruction on other sites so I figure I'm hopefully supporting them and keeping the videos free!

Caswews 02-09-2013 03:11 PM

I buy the daily deal IF I need something else from them and I go down my list of items needed for quilting. I also have to have a "need" for the daily deal as well. Same way with buying the bolt ends.

coopah 02-09-2013 05:07 PM

I have no qualms about ordering from Missouri Star and paying the going rate. Jenny is so personable, it is easy to think of her as a friend. But we have to remember that this is her livelihood and she is responsible for all those others on her payroll. The $5 shipping is a plus, though, and I like getting the deal price and being careful about ordering other things. The fabric is always top notch and the service is delightful!

Yep, I checked out their daily deals a couple times. I always buy more than one pack of charm squares because one is never enough. I found the limit of one, then when I went to order some other things, they were out of stock, so I have never bothered to go back to the daily deals. I do like her youtube tutes though.

leighway 02-10-2013 04:52 AM

Personally, I don't know anyone who got rich owning a quilt store. MSQC has done a fantastic job with their marketing and made themselves available to the anyone who finds them on the internet-GOOD JOB! But it still is a never-ending struggle to keep up with costs and payroll. One little charm pack at cost, multiplied by the number of folks who got the deal makes for a couple of hours of cost just packing and addressing the orders. Postage/shipping is very expensive. I don't think there's any room for criticism.
One persons said it correctly...have a list ready and pay attention. Jump on the deal and then say THANK YOU!

maggiemuggins 02-10-2013 05:30 AM

Just got a note from MSQC in regard to shipping out of US....they said there is a glitch with the shipping when you place an order and they will refund extra back to you....have now asked what the shipping would be to Ontario...will get back to you..and gosh I think 5.00 is excellent shipping amount...

Oh, don't get me wrong, I am not criticizing them at all. And I know it is impossible to keep a large inventory "just in case" a certain item may be wanted. I have about every notion known to man, so rarely need gadgets, etc. I know I should frequent her site more often, since I do enjoy her youtube videos. You can't give EVERYTHING away. I have had this happen on other sites too, so I just don't get around to getting back to them. I commend her on how well her business does, obviously she is doing something right, or she wouldn't still be around. We quilters tend to be fickle. We are all penny pinchers and are looking for a great deal, and we tend to forget that that vendor is a penny pincher too, out of necessity.

craftygater 02-10-2013 07:17 AM

Several months ago I ordered the daily deal which after 10-12 days didn't receive so I called them. they said it shipped and I did receive it the next day. Then the next week I received a second order. I called them and they said to send it back. They even emailed me a shipping label. Due to life getting in the way....it is still sitting on the table. I keep forgetting to print the label and send back.

MartiMorga 02-10-2013 09:09 AM

I love those deals and I agree, it is cheaper than my driving the hour to the nearest store. Plus it is fun. I really need to be more cautious and order more to offset the $5 but heck, I am happy.
