You can learn a lot about yourself just playing with fabric. Today I started out with the goal of emptying out all 5 of those really big plastic totes and folding & organizing all of my fabrics into the built in cupboard in the back of the closet.

I learned that I must really love the color blue. I have a beautiful collection of 48 blue fabrics that total to 143 yards. I also seam to have acquired a bad addiction to novelty fabrics. I have two shelves full and still have 2 ½ totes still to finish going through.

I learned that I just can’t resist buying from the 50% off rack when Joanns has a red tag sale. However most of my red tag sale items don’t go with anything I currently have.

I’m pretty sure that any scrap that I throw in to my scrap bin automatically multiplies in the night and makes more. So I need to plan on cutting scraps into smaller usable sizes on a regular basis.

And lastly I learned that I have pretty good taste, and had lots of fun shopping. And more importantly when you wrap the fabric around the 6-inch ruler, slide out the ruler and fold it in half, it keeps it looking very neat & tidy and somehow look like less fabric. So no need to confess to DH how much fabric that I really have.

accept a ---well done---

When I sorted my fabrics by color I learned that I have twice as much pink and blue than anything else. What is strange is that most of my fabric has been purchased at sales and auctions. I figure most people do most of their sewing for young girls and boys. Congrats on getting it all sorted and under control!

I love blue, too. Don't have 143 yards of it, though. Maybe 40?

Yay!!! Happy for you.

I pulled my fabric out of totes a few months ago and LOVE being able to see what I have. It is soooo much easier.... and inspiring.

That's what I did this past weekend too :-) Love my fabrics!!

DH was checking out my organizing progress and said that he thought I had more fabric than that. He suggested that maybe I should get some more before the price goes up more. I agreed with him of course. :-)

hubby's usual comment is, "it's a disease, isn't it?" as he walks past... i just smile and hope there's no cure.

Great idea!! That is what my DH said....so will be shopping or looking for great sales for a few weeks. Aren't our hubbies a
great addition to our hobbies?

grammysews4u 03-14-2011 09:36 PM

gong to do that soon, and going to try the folding with a ruler. most of the fabric I buy from the 50% off doesnt go with any thing either! But that just brings on another hunt later,

BETTY62 03-14-2011 09:41 PM

You go girl.

scowlkat 03-15-2011 06:32 AM

Working on my fabric too! Had to since shelves my DH put up all came tumbling down (he's not a handyman) and had to have brother put them back up! Hubby helped pick fabric up and put into boxes and remarked, "Do you really think you can use this all up in your lifetime?" Didn't tell him I had five more boxes already in the shed! LOL!

Found I have twice as much green as any other color! And hardly any pink!

Central Ohio Quilter 03-15-2011 07:13 AM

I also have far more blue than any other color.

Probably 2nd most is green, which I am really not crazy about, but it just seems to be needed in so many quilts.

3rd most popular color is red, bright red. Red is my dear mom's (age 92) favorite color so I always think of her when I see red fabric, and I can't resist buying some!

mrs_uncle_fuzzy 03-16-2011 05:44 AM

Isn't it fun to go thru your fabric!~

Yooper32 03-16-2011 06:03 AM

I'm not even going there.

Sandra-P 03-16-2011 10:40 AM

Thanks for sharing about the ruler trick. Isnt it fun to go through your own stash and see fabrics that you forgot you had?

IBQUILTIN 03-16-2011 11:00 AM

I always said my favorite color is blue. Wellllllll, when I reorganized, I found out that teal and yellows and golds are more predominate in my stash than blues Hmmmmmmm, wonder what that really means?

donnalynett 03-16-2011 05:49 PM

When we finished with the remodeling of a spare bedroom my mother came over and we organized it all on shelves. I was surprised to find I had done a pretty good job varying my colors.

Ditter43 03-16-2011 06:24 PM

I also have more blue then any other color! I plan to make another king size quilt this year, predominately in blues. That should even out my stash some! :D

Nanamoms 03-16-2011 07:15 PM

Run, do not walk, to your nearest fabric store (or quilting board!!) LOL

Oh, I just started "collecting" a few months ago and was reorganizing my sewing room/office this weekend. Boy, I think I must have "rabbit" fabric. It sure did multiply fast!! But I'm having fun just sorting and feeling it. My 4yo granddaughter helped me fold some and it had to be "just right"!! I told her I would buy her a mini sewing machine and teach her to sew.

Momsmurf 03-16-2011 09:34 PM

It must be the Spring (Fabric) season...or maybe the effects of time change because I've found myself refolding my bins also.
Yesterday I managed and entire bin although I didn't set out to do it. We suddenly had a severe weather system that was coming through with thunder and lightening so I turned off all my machines and unplugged them and decided to try to re-organized. My focus in buying fabric seems to be the Asians! I can't get enough of them...those and the border fabrics - which I get at least 3 yards of. Great to use for sashing separating flying geese....what I call my lazy quilts.

sylvia77 03-18-2011 02:27 PM

I've noticed I have more purples, & fuschia shades than any thing else.

sewingsuz 03-18-2011 02:29 PM

I like to look and feel my fabric.

I learned that I cannot go 3 months with out petting some of my fabrics. I moved from Alaska November to Washington State and rented a storage unit and I felt lost without my fabric close to me, So I broke down last Saturday and grabbed 5 totes of fabrics to pet, I'm going back this Saturday to get more of my totes of fabrics for comforting reasons. That is what I learned about myself, An greatful that my teenag Sons understand, and helped me.

craftybear 05-15-2011 10:47 PM

that is great, guess I need to take you on another road trip so you can buy more fabrics

KwiltyKahy 05-16-2011 01:27 PM

And it's cheaper than therapy!!!!
