I overestimated how much binding I needed for the quilt I finished yesterday. Are there any good ideas for what to do with the leftover 2 1/2" strips?
I use them to do pieced bindings on scrappy quilts, or they will work to make strip quilt blocks by adding others with them.
How much do you have--enough for a wall hanging or kids' blanket. Is it on the bias or straight of grain. If it's sog, just use it as you would jelly roll strips.
I save them in my scrap bin for scrappy binding or for strips for more blocks :D:D:D
I cut them into squares and use them for leaders/enders for chain piecing

Save it ... you'll have a use! Scrappy bindings can really set off some projects to the utmost! :)
I will save the used left over binding and sew together and bind a charity quilt with it or some crazy just because project with it.
Scrappy binding are very easy to do since you already have most of the work done! They look good on scrappy quilts!
use them for binding potholders...Quick and easy gift..
I use them for scrappy bindings too!! I just throw they in my scrap bin and wait for the day i need it. LOL
Cheers! Rachel |
I have saved all my leftover bindings and when I finish the scrappy string quilt I am working on I will bind it with all the different bindings I saved. Scrappy quilt with scrappy binding.
I use them all the time. You can cut squares out of it, use it in a scrappy quilt
I cut all my bindings the same width and save the left overs to sew together for scrap quilts.

I really like this idea, as pot holders are usually a splash of color, great idea luvtooquilt |
I'm keeping mine in a ice cream bucket, when I have enough I'll sew them together and use them for a scrappy quilt, but I like the idea for potholders or potholder glove

Thanks everyone!! |
I wrap them around cording and make bowls.
I like to use my left over strips for little scrappy strippy handbags for my DGDs.
Sure, save it for the next quilt or press it open and use it in a scrappy strip quilt.
Edging on a pillowcase?
Fill with soft cording and use as decorative trim between the main body of the pillow case and the end flap? |
Have you ever done a jelly roll race quilt? Great way to use strips-- and since you're already sewn together, just add a few more strips-- or make a small version. Here's a link

I roll left over bindings onto empty wax paper rolls, toilet paper rolls, xmas wrapping rolls, etc., and store them in a zippered plastic bag that a blanket came in. Easy to see what is stored and use on oven mitt covers, pot holders which I give to friends and hostess's for dinner parties, we are invited to.

You can save the binding and then when you have another quilt that needs binding you can do a scappy border. I have done many scappy borders and they really look cool.
If you didn't cut them on the bias then you can cut the strips into rectangles or squares and use them in your next block or use them as a really thin border or piping. Jennifer |
I use them for string blocks. press them open first.
I use left over binding pieces to make scrappy log cabin quilts. They come out really nice.

i have a special bag for all my left over binding...beings i use 2 1/2 inch binding, i iron it flat, then have a scrappy 'jelly roll' to work with!!
Same for me on the scrappy log cabins but also scrappy bindings on charity quilts. I just roll them around my hand, fold in half and store in shoe boxes until I have enough to use. I always seem to have leftover binding.

I save the left over binding & sew it together until I have enough to bind scrappy quilts.

I cut all my bindings the same size no matter what the pattern calls for and use the leftovers for a scrappy look.

Thank you for creating this post. I share your need to know but in a different sense. My strips are cut selvage to selvage and have not been sewn. I have just finished my 2nd Bargello and feel like I am in a '2 1/2" strip' forrest. I am torn between putting the strip(s) back into the ruler folded fabric it belongs with in case I use that fabric for something that uses 2 1/2" strips or just sewing the 2 1/2" strips into something to use up the fabric. ??

I use them for scrappy bindings on scrappy quilts.

I am purposely always cutting too much binding (better than ending up short) & am saving them to use in a scrappy pattern that calls for Jelly Rolls (they are same size 2 1/2", but usually are cut to smaller lengths). |
They are also great for binding mug rugs too! I have a big plastic jar that I drop all my extra bindings in and then use them to bind scrappy quilts or mug rugs. Even bind doll quilts with them.
I use them for binding hot pads or mug rugs :D :D :D
