Has anyone have suggestions for leftover muslin. I have different size pieces that I don't really want to sew together and use for a backing on a quilt.

TanyaL 09-19-2011 07:12 AM

What colors are they?

AliKat 09-19-2011 07:15 AM

I use the extra muslin for pattern drafting. Like when I made family members each their own styled Nook e-book covers. Or when I made my own designed notebook computer cover. Using the muslin for purse, wallet, or otherr idea is always thrifty. Even if I have to join a few pieces, it doesn't matter. I am only making a pattern to see how it fits and [sorta] looks.

Potholders, mug rugs, microwave mitts, oven mitts, strips and squares, triangles, foundations for crazy patches.
Well that's about it this morning I still need to finish my coffee, LOL ;-)

applique dresden plate blocks or grandma's fan, or GFG.

I use them to add batting to back of small projects so that the batting does not get in the machine. Then, I use the birthing method to put the backing on.

Use them for fabric foundation blocks/string blocks.

I started throwing out my left over muslin pieces-- too many things to hang onto as it is!!

Thank you for all your great suggestions.

When I am trying a new bag or purse pattern, especially one that has some complexities to it I use muslin for a practice one. The finished test bag gets used for travel, for toiletries, mobile phone/ iPad cords, jewelry, etc.

I cut them into squares for the foundation of string blocks. For the strings I cut leftover fabrics from projects into 2 1/2" strips. This way I use up leftover pieces of muslin and leftover from projects.

Sorry, double posting. I must be a little more patient when I press the Send button and it doesn't Send immediately.

AKA Pillowcase method. You lay the batting, backing & top down, sew almost all the way around, leaving about an 18" space. Then turn it. Often these quilts are then tied.

I use them in my scrappy quilts when I need a light fabric.

ditto for me..when I have left overs, I have a set size I use for string blocks. Sure saves me time when I need to just sit and do some mindless sewing! I have all my strings and the precut muslin ready to go in a container.

ontheriver 09-19-2011 09:38 AM

I use it for string piecing foundation.

GagaSmith 09-19-2011 09:56 AM

Here's an easy potholder idea you could use muslin on. You could replace the leaves with any design you like.

QM 09-19-2011 09:58 AM

If they are good quality muslin, I use them constantly in piecing. I buy Moda minibolts.

IAmCatOwned 09-19-2011 10:01 AM

I'm going to assume that you just quilt and don't usually sew other stuff.

I use leftover muslin as background fabric for a scrap quilt. The various whites always work together.

If you like tote bags or zippered bags, use it as a liner for these.

Greenheron 09-19-2011 10:13 AM

If you have several different tones of muslin they can be put together to make a very subtle crazy quilt block or any other pattern. The block can be made into a pillow, book cover, potholder, etc.

Ditto, I use muslin so much I buy it by weight as a ridiculously low price at a fabric warehouse near me. My most recent project was protectors for my new chair, it doesn't slip like other fabrics

I used them to embroider scenes on and then use them on pillows or in a quilt.

Boy, I sure wish we had a fabric warehouse in Colorado. About 40 years ago we did in downtown Denver, Co. I got the best buys on fabric. Gread idea for chair protecters.

I use it to back 6" square art quilts using the envelope (aka birthing, aka pillowcase) method that are then mounted on an 8" square artist's canvas for framing or hanging as is. The muslin is never seen again. :D

RobertaMarie 09-19-2011 02:20 PM

I use muslin as background for several kinds of blocks. Good for making embroidered blocks, potholders, and small projects. Works well with 30s type quilts. I am old fashioned as you might tell. ;)

sewcrafty 09-20-2011 02:50 AM

I use my muslin small leftovers, by cutting up and putting in my 1.5 square pile for my someday postage stamp.

I use it to test clothing pattern pieces. Doesn't matter if it'e pieced together. Saved a lot of mistakes that way.

mcar 09-20-2011 03:00 AM

Could make a square and combine it with left over batting to practice free motion quilting patterns.

didi 09-20-2011 03:05 AM

OMG don't throw them out, put them on here to sell..I'm sure alot of us would want them...including me!!!!LOL

Use to make bcking for cathedral Window quilt blocks.

Jeanette Boucher 09-20-2011 03:48 AM

Use to make backing for cathedral Window quilt blocks.

Krystyna 09-20-2011 03:54 AM

Perfect for the back of coasters, mug rugs, placemats, runners.

quilt3311 09-20-2011 03:59 AM

Dye it, paint it, etc. Then use it in a quilt.

countryone77 09-20-2011 04:01 AM

Use with batting scraps to practice FMQ.

Use to practice new quilting/applique/etc techniques.

Use as a background fabric in group quilt blocks (presuming it's a good muslin).

KarenR 09-20-2011 04:02 AM

I'd dye it!
