You go to the fabric store, find fabric that is just gorgeous. You buy it, cut it up in little pieces and mix it up with other little pieces and put them all back together to make a gorgeous quilt. Now you're telling me that you need to take the selvage remnants, which are not gorgeous, mix them up and put them all together? Are you kidding me? I have a roomful full of fabric and now I have to go back and salvage those strips? A lot of them don't have proper seam allowance...what do you do with those? Fortunately, I have already saved some. More importantly, in my opinion, I have kept the diagrams Daisy Kingdom, etc always used on their cutouts, plus bits and pieces even tho I have never made a scrap quilt and never intended to. Now I find my self obsessing about scraps! What about excess wording from feed sacks...what's next? Who makes up this stuff?

LOL Love you outlook on things
I never leave enough edge on the selvedges I cut off to make them worth keeping for anything, and besides I only cut off a couple inches at a time, whatever width my strip is.

Me too. Too thrifty I guess!
I agree with Mom-6. I never cut more than a couple inches of salvage at a time.
And your point would be . . . ?
I just love your outlook on things....
Thank you. This brought back a fond memory of my father-in-law who used to tell me that I was always (with my quilting, basket weaving and loom weaving) cutting up big things into little pieces then working like crazy to make them into big pieces again!!! This aside, I never remember to trim the selvages off before cutting my quilt pieces.
You may have just done that for many !! :)
Great Work :-D :-D |
Love your quilt! AND your outlook too :D:D:D
Thanks. I'm just going to make it huge for a bedspread and not weight it down much. They just come up w/too many ideas!
Hilarious post!! Thanks for my smile and laugh for the day!!! HUGS, Sue :D

As to who gets to decide these, things, the answer is US! Us and our dollars!
The "market" depends on what we buy (or don't buy) and that is how the "trends" emerge. I think we are seeing a lot more thriftiness (is that a word, lol) because of the economy. A lot of reusing whatever we can. So....in other words, BLAME THE GOVERMENT! LOL! |
I was laughing out load beacuse my HD asked me the same thing why do you cut it up and sew it back together. What was so funny is the dum look he had on his face.
I only cut the least ampunt I have to from the salvage edges. that makes my main piece bigger. and I may have a larger piece left over for "scrap bag". Then I throw the salavages away. I have plenty of left scraps for another day! or you can give them away or trade them with friends. My favorate quilt shop has a scrap bin. Have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I "collect" selvages too and also my quilting friend saves her for me. I cut the selvage off before I cut into the fabric. These are my first "selvage projects"

If you aren't going to make a scrappy quilt then there is no reason to keep all the scraps. I save salvage strips to use as ties for fat quarter bundles I put together for guild gifts.
It's because of those... "too many ideas".... that we can't get off this board and get some sewing done. I am always looking here for new ideas or easier ways to do something.
Love those scrap quilts and bags. |
My salvages are useless. Not enough there to use.
I also enjoyed your post. As far as the wording portion from feed sacks, my mom said they were used by a woman for womanly needs. Need I say more?
I use the selvedges to tie up my tomato plants. Guess you could call it a calico garden.
If you have a garden, the selvage pieces work great to tie
up tomatoes, peas or any other climbing vegetable or flower. |

Love these projects. I use to leave the selvages on or cut them the width if they were white and then I would use the white width cut offs as leaders and enders. I have started cutting all my selvages off, to make selvage projects, since I saw a thread 2-3 months ago. Now, I have scraps of my scraps. It just goes with what my family has said about me for years: I never throw anything away!!! |
I didn't know that they were suppose to be a certain width so just started cutting them off leaving a bit of the fabric. I ended up sending to a quilter who wanted them down in Florida. Yesterday in the mail I got the neatest floppy book mark made from my selvages and from my latest quilt to boot. How fun was that! It is so cute! Thanks Chele.
I never cared about scraps either until reading some threads on here and never had any intention of making a scrap quilt or a crumb or string or anything like that...since reading these posts, I too have become obsessed with my scraps of various sizes and for various projects :)
Your post was so funny! We're all nuts, aren't we? I wish I can get off this laptop and go finish that Minkie project I'm wrestling with!
some selvedges are a lot wider than they need to be IMHO.
Have you ever noticed that? Our fabrics are getting narrower and costing us more. Okay off my soap box now. >;D |
I am very thrifty in what I use, as it is all donated, and I don't want to waste anything. God bless.
I met a man from South Africe visiting the U.S. for the first time. He could not understand why we feed and water our grass to make it grow and then cut it off and do the same thng over and over again!!!
