I am looking at the lighting on Joann's website and can't decide which would be better, the Naturalight or the Ottlight. Anyone have any of these? What are your thoughts?

Quiltforme 09-24-2010 06:42 PM

I have an ottlight and love it.

DebraK 09-24-2010 06:43 PM

I love my Ott light, but I bought it on sale while I worked at Joann's, so I got it fairly cheap. Haven't tried the other light. This was years ago, and I don't think there was a choice ;-)

dellareya 09-24-2010 06:50 PM

I now have 2 Ott lights and love them.

tcnmom 09-24-2010 06:58 PM

I have 4 Ott lights and love them.

sewgull 09-24-2010 07:01 PM

Tuesday Morning had Ott lights last week very cheap

merrylouw 09-24-2010 07:03 PM

I got a small folding Ott light at Jo Ann's with a 40% coupon a couple of weeks ago. I love it ; it really helps me see better at the sewing machine. I'm really glad I got it.

sylviak 09-24-2010 07:07 PM

I bought a cheaper lamp and put an Ott light bulb in it.

Jeanniejo 09-24-2010 07:09 PM

I have 3 Ott lights. One over my machine, one over my chair for hand work , and one that is portable for retreats etc. Love them all !!!!!

gale 09-24-2010 07:10 PM

I have a small ott lite and a bigger daylight brand light and I can't tell the difference. I've never seen the naturallight.

newquilter10 09-24-2010 07:11 PM

I have an Ott Light and love it. It is just like sitting in daylight.

featherweight 09-24-2010 07:19 PM

I have 3 or 4 Ott lights. You sure get true color from the,. I love them. One is a portable that I found at an estate sale for $3.00, I couldn't believe it. I take it to class with me.

lovequilts 09-24-2010 07:30 PM

I have 2 OTT lights. One for handsewing and one by my machine. Love them both

Jingle 09-24-2010 07:59 PM

We got rid of the ceiling fan/4 light kit, took 60W bulbs, I bought a 3 light fixture that takes 100W bulbs and I could operate under it, if I knew how to. I use reveal bulbs and they do put off the heat. This fixture is over the dining table, where I quilt and sometimes piece.
In sewing room I have florescent lights, works very well.

barbgooch 09-24-2010 08:02 PM

In addition to providing a lot of good natural light, it's great when I want to make sure my thread matches the fabric I'm putting it on, as well as matching fabrics when they are not from the same manufacturer.

BellaBoo 09-24-2010 08:43 PM

I have the Ott light and it's great. I've never used the other one so I can't compare the two.

ChubbyBunny 09-24-2010 09:03 PM

I just purchased my first Ott Light and I love it! Will definitely purchase another one.

mawcarol 09-25-2010 04:53 AM

I love my Ott light.

costumegirl 09-25-2010 05:13 AM

I use my Ott light every time I sew or craft. My eyesight is getting weaker and I find that I need a bright light to do any close hand or machine work. It really lessens the eye strain.

Be sure to shop around - I think there was a thread here discussing pricing and different places to buy a 'true color/daylight' lamp that is the same as the Ott light.

newbie1001 09-25-2010 06:34 AM

This may not fit 100 % in this topic, but I have problems figuring out how to position my lights. Right now I have a desk lamp with a flexible arm that is attached to the table to the right of my machine, and it's lamp part is between me and the sewing machine. If I position it so that is shines directly on my needle area, it's in the way of my head and covers up buttons on the machine that I need. I tried mounting it on different sides of the table, it's always in the way somehow. Do any of you have something like a spotlight coming from the ceiling? Where are your lights positioned? Thanks!

costumegirl 09-25-2010 07:16 AM

I was positioning mine to the side and in front of my machine but then I read here that the full spectrum lights may affect the computer screen on the machine so now I put it to the side and behind the machine, positioning it so that it shines on the needle plate. It does get in the way sometimes but I really need the extra light.

featherweight 09-25-2010 07:25 AM

It also works better for me at the back of the machine.

BarbaraA 09-25-2010 07:52 AM

I too am interested in which one seems the best. I bought one on sale at Michaels and its a bit too small. But the other ones look too big. So I am still looking for that perfect light.

Holice 09-25-2010 07:55 AM

I read all the posts and not sure anyone answered the original question which was "Ott Light vs Naturalight"

There may not be any difference in them. I have both.
However, the only way to truly tell is to take some fabric and test both.

costumegirl 09-25-2010 09:50 AM

Holice - Love your avatar! :)

tolepainter54 09-25-2010 10:03 AM

I have to Ott lamps - I love them.

Luv Quilts and Cats 09-25-2010 10:04 AM

I have Ott lights and love them!

belmer 09-25-2010 11:28 AM

Ok, OK, Ok..... I think I need to look into buying an Ott light.

Kitsie 09-25-2010 11:38 AM

I use a "High Density Florescent Light". It's got a small 4-tube 120AC bulb and is a table lamp. Is that the same?

costumegirl 09-25-2010 04:01 PM

I don't know anything about the high density florescent but the Ott bulbs are a full spectrum light which means it is like true sunlight and shows the true colors of fabrics.

I have never seen a Naturalight so can't comment on that. I have an Ottlight and I really like it and the way it shows true colors.

quiltnmom 09-25-2010 07:30 PM

I believe it is an overwhelming majority that all love their ott light.

Babs194068 09-26-2010 03:31 AM

I have an Ottlight which was a gift. I love the soft light it puts out.

costumegirl 09-26-2010 04:39 AM

I have the tall stand up Ott with the magnifier and really like it - use it all the time but the only problem that I have with it is that it will tip over fairly easily. I have to be very careful when I move it and on how I position it so that it doesn't topple over.

nhweaver 09-26-2010 04:45 AM

I have an ott light which I love, but just got a verilux optix at Tuesday Morning and it is much much better. Has 3 settings too!!! Brighter for these old eyes.
My sewing room was in a dark attic bedroom eave with little light from the dormer, my dh had a solatube put in last week, and now I need sunglasses (ha ha) when I sew. what a difference.

mar32428 09-26-2010 05:16 AM

Me too and love 'em.

OmaForFour 09-26-2010 05:47 AM

I have two Ott lights but I also put natural light bulbs in my ceiling lights and lamps. The natural light is good for you anyway in the winter when you don't get out a lot. I also have a nice bright light on my featherweight which is extremely helpful when I am working on the machine.

BarbS 09-26-2010 05:58 AM

When we were travelling this summer I stopped in a Lowe's store looking for an Ott-Lite Floor Lamp. I met a very helpful gentleman there who suggested to me that I didn't need to buy a lamp all I needed was to the the Ott-lite "bulbs".....they now make bulbs that look like regular light bulbs (they have the regular screw in base) but provide full spectrum lighting. I bought a half dozen of these bulbs...I think they were about $5.00 each and I put them in my regular lamps!! They are wonderful!! So I took the couple of hundred $$ I saved and bought some more fabric!! LOL

Please note, for a while there were Ott lights with full spectrum and those (cheaper) without on the market. Take 2 swatches of the same fabric to the store to compare under different lighting systems to be sure you're getting what you think you are.

Been there, done that.

I have the OTT light, suppose to be the best for quilters (crafts)
Last week they had them on sale 50% off, hope they still are.
