I see so many comments about quilters not knowing about shops that others have posted in their area. So, I thought I would create a comprehensive list by state. It seems all the lists on the web are incomplete or list shops that no longer exist.
Rather than go through all the posts, would all of you help me by posting the information in this thread and I will compile it into a file? Here is the info that I would be looking for: Name Exact Street Address Town/City, State, Zip Phone number Website Address as a link (be sure to put http://www.xxxxxx) Comments about specialties for the shop, such as classes, mostly moda, features orientals, etc. As a group, we can keep this list current if you let me know when a shop opens or closes. I will date each entry so we can be sure info is current. I work two jobs, so this is not a quickie thing for me to complete, but I will get it done as soon as possible. Thanks for your help! Diane |

Here is a link to quilt shops in Minnesota. This is a listing from this years shop hop, so I know they are all open at this time.
This list is a great idea! http://www.quiltminnesota.com/Partic...gShops2010.htm |
Will you be publishing this reference work, either in print or as a download, for users other than those who see it here? And, if not, what's to stop someone else from doing just that for a profit? Also are we supposed to include shops that we would not buy from on a dare? Just curious.
|
let's not and say we did.
submit only the shops you like. after all, somebody else may be crazy about the one(s) you don't. ;-) |
Here in my neck of Florida there are:
Quilters Haven and More 925 10th Street East (US 301) Palmetto, FL 34221 (Directly across from John Deere dealership Highland Tractor) (941) 729-0511 1-800-775-4445 Store Hours: 9:30-4:00 Monday-Saturday November-April Summer Hours: 9:30-4:00 Tuesday-Saturday May-October http://www.quiltershavenandmore.com I like this idea, as it also gives me an opprotunity to go to these Quilt shops online!!!! One of them will have the fabric I am looking for!!!! Love it! |
It would be a lot easier just to google "(Location) quilt shops". Unless you want to be the "Cindy's List" for quilts. And that is really a full-time job.
|
I still think it is a good idea....different quilters in different areas posting their favorite quilt shop, especially if the also post a link to the quilt shop, then I can click and look around the store! As I am sitting in my living room, I can cruise the good old USA, shopping!!! Too bad they don't put together a shop hop on the net!!!!
|
Hi Everyone,
Thank you all for your concern about the amount of work involved and I appreciate those who are looking out for me, but I think you might be missing the point. There are quilt shops out there that do not have web sites. There are a ton of lists on the web, but they are incomplete and some of them are very old and have closed shops on their lists. Some web site shops, do not have a retail store or are located in homes. I don't want to research the web looking for quilt shops and verifying their status. What I am asking for is for members to send me the info via this thread for the shops they go to, complete address, phone, web link and any details about the shop of particular interest, such as long arm rentals, lots of fats, mostly Moda, has classes, etc. I will compile a list by state, and maybe alpha by town, of shops you have given me so that we all know these shops exist and are currently in business and will put the month/year next to the name of the time it gets posted. I don't mind making the list and keeping it updated at all. I will put it in a Google spread sheet and provide a public link to it. If someone steals it for profit, they will have to live with themselves. My only interest is giving back to the board members here who have been a fabulous source of inspiration, compassion and knowledge. Everyone is free to share the links if they choose to. I will kindly ask all of you to please not send me a link to a list. I am looking for the shops you go to and their locations only. Service is not a concern and will not be posted in the commentary portion. Thank you very much to everyone who participates. Diane |

They still should be listed. I love the Quilter's travel book, but it is not complete. That book is only as good as what shops want to advertise. I, as I know you probably have experienced, have found wonderful quilt stores during our travels of shops not listed in the book. So...my bottom line.... list all the shops for a complete and thorough list. :) |

But if the standard is going to be something is better than nothing, then I think the list will be no better than what is already available to us. |
i think we'd have no way of knowing whether somebody had included all possible shops in his/her area..
and how wide a radius is "area"? what counts as a shop? what doesn't? the list of variables can get quite long. it won't be merely better than nothing. it will be "i can't believe one of our members has offered so generously to spend uncounted hours of time and effort to compile this great list that i might not find anywhere else on the internet." this glass is definitely full. |
Do you want to include only "brick and mortar" shops?
Do you want to include stores/shops that have only a few supplies and fabrics (some small town stores might have an "area" like the old Ben Franklin stores had)? Will there be a way to let you know when a shop has closed? An aside/question: Do the shops that are listed in the guides need to pay a fee to be listed/included? Are you still in the data collection stages? I was wondering what format you will use to share the information. (My computer expertise is pretty limited) Are you/we giving estimates of whether the shop is small, medium, or large? Or just if it exists - where it is - and when it is open? I applaud you for taking this on. I really like the idea of having a "as of this date, this info is correct" notation on each entry. |

It will be a Google Spread sheet accessible by a link. I'm not doing anything more complicated than simply creating a list. This will be a great thing for those who travel and will be able to find shops on their route. I just started collecting data from members and it will be an ongoing process. The most important thing is that the list be compiled of shops that are currently in business. I will state in the list if the shop eventually closes. I will not put anything judgemental about the shops in the list. I am simply verifying that the shops exist and are open for business, and noting any specialty of the shop. Shops such as Ben Franklin and Walmart that have fabric are certainly considered a source for quilt shoppers and should be on the list. Published books are out of date before they are even printed. A complete and accessible internet list for free, will be the most reliable source. I am not including shops that are only have a website and not a retail outlet. It doesn't matter where they are located because they are only accessible on the web. Diane |

My understanding of this is:
(1) dmackey has offered to compile a list of quilt shops and stores/shops that sell fabric/quilting supplies that are open to the public (2) the information will be coming ONLY from board members - the information will only be as accurate and complete as to what dmackey receives from the members and her transcription of the info (3) reviews of the shop, service, etc. will NOT be included (4) specialties of the shop - such as civil war prints, 1930's reproductions, etc, may be included Now I'm confused as to how to make #3 and #4 compatible I think, almost by definition, that a list of this sort will always be incomplete. |
The way I see it....it's not hard....just post "YOUR" favorite quilt shop in "YOUR" area..... right?
|
I am simply compiling a list of shops that members are aware of that are currently in business and their locations for those who travel or for those who were not aware of what was in their area, so they can easily find the shops and I have offered to keep it updated. That's all, nothing more, nothing less. I certainly hope it is better than nothing.
We all have had problems with shops at one time or another, but that doesn't mean they should be excluded, and no one is required to include all available in their area. I would like to see this thread go back to it's original intent, and that is a request for members to send me information requested in my original post about current shops, so I can compile the list. Thanks! Diane |

Members,
I simply offered to make a list of CURRENTLY exisiting quilt shops, for free, kept updated, and asked for your help to create this list by sending me the local info on the places you shop. It seems my request is creating quite a bit of unintended controversy and a simple request is turning into a debate. Please continue to send me posts as outlined in my original message and keep this thread simple, so I don't regret making the offer. There has been more posts debating this list than there has been requested information. Thank you kindly for your consideration. Diane |
I was thinking in terms of expressions like
GREAT selection of civil war prints!!!! :D :D :D (which is - in a way - judgemental) as compared to Approximately 10 feet of shelving devoted to civil war prints - mostly by (manufacturer name) - (and this is boring but probably not judgemental) |

Diane I think its wonderful that you are attempting to take this task on and I for one will very apprecitive... :-D

Thanks, Diane |
What, exactly, is a Google spreadsheet and what is needed to access/copy/save same? I've never heard of it and am far from a computer novice. Thanks.

You can share the documents with others or make it public. You can control who has access to changes too. It is a very easy way to share info with others without creating a web page, and it gives me a way to back up or store files that I wouldn't want to lose on my hard drive. Diane |
