So look carefully at a pattern to see which look you want to end up with. On my mini's I start with the lights and end up with the longest being darks so the pattern touches. If you start with a light and a dark, then one edge can touch and if you start with two darks the lights will be at the edges and they won't touch. I know it sounds nutty but, it really made a difference in the minis. Any half square pattern can be a log cabin pattern. Since visually the light and dark contrast makes a half square block. It opens up all sorts of pattern ideas.

I start with the lights on my mini's too, but I do it because I usually have more darks than lights...I only use "precuts" when I make my mini's...no yardage is harmed in the making of them:D

Very thoughtful observation, toverly. What size do you make yours?

I have seen so many beautiful log cabins. Your sister is very lucky you are doing this for her.

zozee you are a GREAT sister! And very thoughtful of you to understand the need to have extra comfort this first time around without mom.

You are also really adventurous to be starting this with a close deadline! I wish you luck and hope you post pics of your progress!~

I make quite a few patriotic ones for the Veterans here in Phoenix. I like them more rectangular but love this pattern. I add something at the top and bottom to help with that. This one is made with 2 inch strips.

I made my first Log Cabin from a Jenny Doane tutorial from Missouri Star Quilt Company for my daughter and it turned out great. No star but movement. Here's a link: https://quiltingtutorials.com/tutorials?q=Log%20Cabin. Good luck and your sister will be thrilled with whatever you do.

If you hate to cut the fabric, check out Jordan Fabrics. They are cut PERFECTLY so all you have to do is sit down and sew. They are also cut on the length of fabric so they don't stretch. There are a wide variety of fabrics to choose from and all you have to worry about is getting the right 1/4" . I love their log cabins.! Also, they are not pinked so you don't have to worry about that crazy edge.

I like that, but I think I want to find a pattern that incorporates stars into the log cabin quilt overall.

I don't know if anyone mentioned this but, Quilt in a Day has a log cabin quilt that has the stars throughout the design. I made one for my cousin and she loved it.

zozee, I've made about three Log Cabin quilts with earth tones. If you would like to know my source, send me a pm. The fabrics I used are all the same print, but available in 17 different shades. I made this quilt for my sister -- of course this is for a king size bed, but you could make it much smaller if you wish --

If I'm not sure what piece to put where, I take the time to copy onto paper, then I can cut and rearrange before having regrets. Have fun.

Zozee have you looked at Orion's Star by Eleanor Burns? I made that one years ago and am pretty sure that I posted it here. I don't know how to link it but I will try to see if I have a picture saved on this computer.
