I'm working on my first log cabin quilt. Wow, all the precise measurements and the necessity to keep squaring each square to exact measurement otherwise they won't fit together. None of the instructions books I have mention this. Any comments?

They are easy to make. My first was a log cabin also. I used Eleanor Burns book Quilt in A Day. She makes it so easy with clear instructions. Relax and enjoy the fun!

if you use a foundation it is easier(you don't have to worry so much about each round- you just square each finished block)- but adding log after log can get tedious...they are worth all the work in the end though- there is just something very special about log-cabin quilts!

My sister only makes log cabin quilts. She squares each block. Her quilts come out square and flat!

I'm with you! Also working on my first log cabin and tedious doesn't even cover it. Don't think I'll ever do another one. It's coming along but it's definitely a fairly slow processs. Plus I've run out of one of my fabrics so I need to do a search and see where I can get that as well as calculate how much I need of my other to see if I have enough of that as well. I'm only using 2 fabrics. And I don't think I'll ever do black on black piecing ever again in my lifetime!

I have never tried a true log cabin for this reason. I just make a wonky log cabin so I don't have to square anything but the final block LOL
Good luck!! Rachel |
I just make the outside logs wider. I am working on one where I cuts the strips 1 1/2 wide. The last rotation is cut 2 inches---then trimmed to perfection.
I still take care with the middle ones but not to drive myself crazy. |
I love to make log cabins.

I agree with RVQuilter..they are very easy..Eleanore Burns "Quilt In A Day" is the way to go..long stripes of each log color and chain piece them..very little squaring up that way!! Good Luck !!!

I still take care with the middle ones but not to drive myself crazy. Made my Log Cabin years ago; it never occured to me to square a block til it was finished. If I'd been smart enuf to use your method - my last log strips would be the same size - oh well, too late now. |
