The Lonestar that was made by DGF has 8 points and this was back in the early half of the last century around 1950.
I never saw a five point either. |

It is made the same as the 8 point you just use a 60 degree diamond template instead of the 45 degree.
i did this without doing any math and ended up with a six pointed star. it was a challenge to get it all sqare when i was done. |
A 60 degree diamond makes a 6 pointed star.
A 72 degree diamond makes a 5 pointed star. A 45 degree diamond makes an 8 pointed star. see catmcclure's diagram above. |

My question about a lone star or Texas star is: Can you make one using jelly roll strips sewn together and then cut at 45 degree angle? Would it work for 60 and 72? In my head this seems like it would work but then again...

Please remember that almost any traditional quilt or block has several names and many names have several quilts/blocks. This is a folk art. Variations are to be expected and celebrated. Of course whatever your mother grew up with is "right" to her. In Barbara Brackman's encyclopedia of pieced quilt patterns, I found a 5 pointed star with some resemblance to what I call a Lone Star or Star of Bethlehem.
