I am about to start a lone star quilt. Does anyone have any good tips for this quilt?
|
Lots of bias edges with this quilt. Heavy starching helps. Good luck. It's a beautiful quilt.
|
Please share as you go. I have this way down on my to do list. Many have made them. Lots have been posted lately. I don't think we have a tutorial yet for the lone star. It would be wonderful if someone would do one. Good luck on yours.

Thanks, I wouldn't have thought of that. |

A tutorial would be helpful. I'm relying on an old book I have. I'm excited about this. Need to pick up a few more fabrics this week. |
Wine, LOTS OF WINE.... and chocolate...
|
I was just looking at a Lone Star pattern in McCalls Quick Quilts(the last edition).I've never done one myself and I am not sure how you are planning on piecing this together, but the pattern used strip piecing.
|
Starch those fabrics stiff  :D:D:D
|
Starch or sizing to stabilize those bias edges, and lots of pins to match up all those seams! And patience...LOTS of patience! :D
|
Iron the seams open instead of just to one side or the other. That was you don't have to plan ahead on where the seams meet to have them pointing in opposite directions. Bulk where the seams meet is a big issue with this pattern. Also, sew the pieces that meet in the middle in parts so before sewing all together.
|
Starch heavily *before* cutting the fabric! Your cuts will be more accurate and they will stay accurate when the fabric is handled.

I like this tutorial |
I bought the printed interfacing from quiltsmart and that's how I made my quilt. You'll have no "Y" seams to mess around with and the quilt comes together really well. Took 2 months for me to do mine. Have a great day, Huggies, Fay

In addition to the starch, wine & chocolate--I would use the strip piecing method and press the seams open. I think Kaye Woods even has a special ruler or template she uses--Maybe the Starmaker 8? I use & love her StarMaker 6.
|
I have the Star maker 6 also and love it. I did find a 60 degree diamond shaped ruler at Joanns, but I want a 45 degree one, this way I can cut the diamonds any size I want. Have a great day, Huggies, Fay

Here's the Tute I used when I made my first 2nd 3rd and 4th lonestar quilt.
You still have bias edges and need to be careful but not nearly as careful as you would if you cut each diamond seperately. I had next to no stretching if I was careful and I didn't use any starch at all. http://www.angelfire.com/va3/jclane/.../LoneStar.html |
That was one of the first quilts I made when I taught myself quilting. I really didn't have any trouble with it. Yes, it took a while to complete but it was worth it. My DGD thought so.

I would like to say thank-you for posting all the wonderful suggestions as this one is also on my want to learn list.

I was getting so frustrated with the Lone Star top I am piecing, getting all those strips to match up right:/ I clicked on many sites online and could not find anything to clarify how to sew the diamond strips together. Then I started to look good ole quilting board here and found a couple links, but none that were as clear as the one you talked about!
So thank you, thank you--you have no idea how MUCH you have eased my frustration. I sewed together 2 separate points in 10 min. that's it!! Little tedious, but hey if it gets the job done then so BE IT!!! Now I have to go thank that pers0n with the lovely tutorial:):) Have a GREAT day!! |
