Momof3Es 12-02-2010 07:14 PM

My local (30 mins away) quilt shop is owned by Menonites (can't spell that word to save my hinee) and I was just wondering if their prices were out of line?? Here they are...
Crib 45x60 $32.
Twin 72x90 $53.
Full 81x96 $58.
Queen 90x108 $69.
King 108x120 $86
I haven't checked around anywhere else. Mind you I live in west central WI in a small town.

erstan947 12-02-2010 07:17 PM

Those prices are incredibly low! If you like their work go for it. I don't think you will get a better price anywhere.

Sadiemae 12-02-2010 07:17 PM

It totally depends on the kind of quilting being done. They are very reasonable depending on what the quilting is. Where I live they sew by hand~~not machine!

Tolelady53 12-02-2010 07:21 PM

One question--do you supply the batting or do they? According to the prices I charge they are extremely reasonable. I supply the batting (usually cotton) and for a queen size all-over pattern I usually get $100. The King is normally $125-150. So I would say they are very reasonable.

Maride 12-02-2010 07:22 PM

Seems too low to me.

stewyscrewy 12-02-2010 07:23 PM

those are incredable pricings for quilting. either by hand or machine. If you like thier designs then by all means go for it.

suebee 12-02-2010 07:25 PM

I was going to say, these prices seem way to low.

DebraK 12-02-2010 07:25 PM

Not at all!

Nope. The batting prices in your example would be Queen-5oz 9.50 and for 6.6oz it's 10.50 added to the price. Then they have a price list to add the binding on. ie...Queen 90x108 $35. King 108x120 $42. I have seen their work and it is beautiful.
I am quite positive that its done on the LA.

stewyscrewy 12-02-2010 07:27 PM

doing the math for just the queen size quilt it works out to .007 cents per square inch. the is 7 tenths of 1 cent. how on earth can they do that.

stewyscrewy 12-02-2010 07:29 PM

if they are true menonites then they dont use a longarm. they use hand power only. nothign electrical.

luckylindy333 12-02-2010 07:29 PM

I just had a lap quilt done for $65.00 and she said she was giving me a discount! It was very beautiful and this is the west coast.

oatw13 12-02-2010 07:35 PM

Compared to prices I have seen locally (and many places online), these prices are about half. They are quite low. I would certainly give them a try. :)

Not here. Here it is the Amish that don't use electric. The menonites have stores and this place even fixes sewing machines! I went there today to get a bobbin casing that I lost. Only $14 and they adjusted the tension which is good because I have no idea where to even look to adjust that!

That is correct for here also, Amish do not use electricity or rubber tires etc. But the Mennonite religion does not restrict me from electricity. Those prices are excellent, it their work is as great as you stated it would seem to me that is almost a steal.

stewyscrewy 12-02-2010 07:50 PM

oops my bad... thougth they were the same as the amish.

Momof3Es 12-02-2010 07:51 PM

It's ok. I just recently read a couple of articles that explained some of the differences. It was amazingly interesting. Otherwise I don't know much about them at all.

0tis 12-02-2010 08:08 PM

Very good price - here in California - its about 130-140 for a queen size with quilting only - no batting or finishing.

Lori S 12-02-2010 08:12 PM

I would never do my own machine quilting again .. if I could get that kind of price for LongArm services.

stewyscrewy 12-02-2010 08:13 PM

i just dont see how they can do it

JoyVoltenburg 12-02-2010 08:19 PM

Those prices are extremely low. that's about half of what I charge. The Mennonites in our nearby town are in line with what I charge. I don't see how they can charge so little.

Dave-Jane 12-02-2010 08:20 PM

Are there other charges? Thread, turning, loading on the machine?---Dave B.

dgsmom 12-02-2010 08:31 PM

those are about what i pay and she includes poly batting

nana katie 12-02-2010 08:31 PM

Great prices.

QuiltQtrs 12-02-2010 08:52 PM

Please post a photo of your finished quilt. Would love to see the type
quilting you get for prices mentioned. They are more than reasonable
even if doing simple Meander or Pantos edge to edge.

Jim 12-02-2010 08:56 PM

Glad to hear their prices....it means ours are extremely low...which Ive been telling my wife.. we are still charging the prices that we started with 12 yrs ago when we started doing machine quilting

BobbysGirl 12-02-2010 09:06 PM

Wish I lived nearby. If that is for "custom" quilting it is very low compared to around me.

irishrose 12-02-2010 09:11 PM

Do they do mail order? Those prices are a lot less than anyone here charges in Northern Lower Michigan. I haven't checked the Amish. I'll have my daughter check. I was in an Amish home recently. A beautiful new house with a huge sunny sewing room with three new, very modern machines. I didn't want to appear to be nosy, so I didn't look too closely, but I think they may have been converted to treadle.

Feather3 12-02-2010 09:17 PM

Here in PA the Amish use machines, but they power them by gasoline fueled generators.

As for the quilt prices....those are about half of what the local quilt shop charges here.

I don't know about all areas. In my area I know that their cost of living is way lower than ours. They live in a small community, build their own houses, make their own clothes, raise their own food, educate their own children, etc... This would make a difference in what they could charge.

Same here in PA. In fact, my Bernina dealer is Mennonite.

ljsunflower 12-02-2010 10:13 PM

That is very good prices!
If they do mail order, I will gladly send them a quilt just to check out the quilting.
Let us know if you find out anything more about this place.

Is your Dealer "Hoover's"?

Annaquilts 12-02-2010 10:33 PM

That seems dirt cheap even for an all over pattern.

sewdarnbusy 12-02-2010 10:47 PM

That's cheap.

auntiehenno 12-03-2010 01:15 AM

Really fantasitc prices!

ckcowl 12-03-2010 02:36 AM

wow, those are amazingly inexpensive prices...my goodness. i wonder how they make any money? those are VERY REASONABLE! infact...a steal!

onice 12-03-2010 02:37 AM

Can you share any contact info about this quilting service?

plainpat 12-03-2010 03:14 AM

Same here. The Amish don't have electric,Mennonites do. They also have cars/trucks & go to diff areas to settle it.Each family has their own business & sometimes more than one.Maybe they are trying to get established by having low prices....or might be, they can make a profit by having a lot of customers.Do they do mail order?
