I just got new, longer ploles for my longarm frame and new leaders to go with it. The previous poles had the leaders affixed to the poles with velcro. I've heard also that one can use duct tape. Would duct tape work? Has anyone used it? Or should I stick with the velcro?
I've heard of using Elmer's Glue. I know that mine are glued on, but they were like that when I got the machine. Don't know if it's Elmer's or not.
I use velcro. I would be concerned that duct tape might stretch after a while or get gummy around the edges.
I have mine attached with industrial strength Velcro. It holds well and easy to apply.
I don't know the answer, but hope it is an easy one.
Mine came already attached but they are attached with that heavy duty packing tape the kind that has the fibers in it. Looks to be about 3" wide. Seems to be holding up fine.
I like Velcro because I can take the leaders off and machine baste them to the quilt backing, and then slap them back on the poles. Much faster than pinning for me.

Mine are attached with double sided carpet tape and than with clear duct tape on top.
i used double sided tape and then i have velcro to attach the quilt to the leaders so i don't have to pin anything
I would stick with velcro...I bought my sticky side only from a sewing machine /long arm place... Try this link:
http://mikesmachineshop.com/ you can buy it by the inch..and just one side. |
On the longarm I rent, they are attached with duct tape. It's never been a problem with me. The machine is 5 years old, and she's never had to replace the tape. Hope that helps!
Velcro, Velcro, Velcro. So much easier to take off & on.
I use the velcro thats with it,works fine, never had any problems.
I have an Innova 26 and the leaders are fastened to the poles with duct tape. I use leader grips to fasten the quilt to the leaders.
I used double sided carpet tape. Works great
They make zippers and they work wonderful

Mine are velcro'd on. I have had situations where I had to take my machine in for service prior to finishing a quilt. With velcro I was able to leave the quilt pinned on and remove the leaders. Then I could remove the take up pole and get my machine to the service tech. If they were glued on you'd have no choice but to repin your quilt. That would be a nightmare. Make sure you mark the center of the leaders and the poles with a sharpie so that you can line up the leaders correctly when you put them back on.
I use velco because should a situation ever arise that you need to remove the quilt from the frame,(and it has),it is very easy to replace it by taking it off at the velco, not unpinning it.

Mine is also with velcro which is very easy for taking off and basting the quilt to the leads. This is a good way because you don't get poked with pins as you are rolling up the quilt.
I have a Bernina quilt frame and it has the velcro and
when it needs to be replaced I will put the same thing back on. Sometimes if you try to cut corners you cause yourself a lot of extra work in the long run. I liked the idea of taking your leader off and stitching the quilt to it. I assume its a basting stitch that will come off easy. I love listening to all the new ideas you gals have. |
What kind of velcro did you use? The ones I velcro'd on didn't stay on even though I cleaned the poles well before attatching-the glue didn't hold?
I would LOVE to baste my quilts to the leaders to save time! |

www.mikesmachineshop.com If you dont' find it on the site, be sure to ask. His velcro is extra sticky and you can purchase only the loop side or only the fuzzy side by the inch. Not pricey either. Call him if you have questions. He is wonderful to work with... |
My leaders I put on myself with duct tape because it was what the dealer told me to do. I have had mine on now for 5 years and have had no problems with them. When I am not using the frame I just roll up the leaders onto the poles and pin them to keep the weight of the leader fabric from pulling on the tape. Hope this is helpful!

What system do you have? I would recommend the velcro, that way if you need to take the leaders off, you would not have a sticky residue on the pole.
I used duct tape on my first longarm machine...I replaced the old leaders, which were on with duct tape also. The original was on the machine 15 years...held well. Did leave a residue that I had to scrape off,I then I attached the new leaders. They were on the machine when I sold it...no problems whatsoever...I have velcro on the new machine..it's ok, but not great.

I want to thank all for the advertising of Velcro. I worked for them back in the 70's and 80's. Wonderful company to work for and great product.

Mine are attached with velcro and a few inches out have a zipper so I can unzip it, baste the backing on and zip it back on. The velcro'd portion stays on the poles. It's great.
Same here. It's easy to put the leaders on and off with the velcro. Good luck!
Mine are attached with duct tape - so far so good. But I would like to find that industrial velcro - where do I find that at ?
I am also thinking that I am going to purchase the set of zippers you sew on your leaders and then you sew them on your quilt top and back....and then ZIP....your quilt is loaded !!! I have just spent the last SEVERAL HOURS pinning a quilt on ....and re-pinning.....and pinning....... I think I am ready to quilt now. I really needed to get 2 quilts quilted today....but....(sigh).....I am running out of steam. Wish me luck ! |
I used "gorilla" tape on my old one. You can find gorilla tape near the duct tape at wal-mart.
Now I see my post.
I use packing tape but I like the velco idea.
