I found a picture on the internet of this quilting frame, printed it off and hubby made me one today. He also made me 2 'additional' 10 in legs to slip on the back legs so the frame will tilt towards me when I am using it by myself. Here it is.
The only 'problem' I am having is the snap clamps we bought at Lowes in the plumbing dept. aren't tight enough to hold the quilt onto the frame. They hold it on, just not tight enough, any suggestions? |
I would add another thickness of fabric (maybe felt) under the snap clamps to help them hold better. Or maybe some of the waffle-y shelf liner that is available at the dollar store. It really grips!

I thought about the 'non slip' stuff and did cut some to put under the clamps but it still wasn't enough. I will try the extra fabris underneath, thanks!

wow, how nice of your hubby,
do you have the link online to show how to make it or did your hubby just design it as I would like for my hubby to make one |
My husband made me one just like that and I agree the
clamps don't hold the quilt tight enough so I use left over batting and make sure it is cut long enough and wide enough to cover the clamps. It will work perfect for you. |
nice job.

Or try to find an old mattress pad at a thrift store, these can be doubled and there is a lot of fabric on each one.

I have the floor Q Snap frame. The clamps are half pvc pipes with ridges on the inside. They grip the quilt and you can turn and tightened or loosen the tension easy. You can buy the pvc long clamps at Q Snap website. http://www.qsnap.com/default.asp I would call and ask about the diameter of the pvc before ordering. I think the Q snap frame are not standard size PVC.

Now that's an awesome hubby!

could you slip the clamps into an old pair of thick socks? Just keep adding socks till it holds, or fold the socks over a couple of times and slip the clamp in it.
|
Try the bicycle rings that quilters use to hold rolls together - they just might do the trick.
|
I found some old elastic suspenders at my local thrift store. They were sewn together in an "X" with clips on both ends. Remove the stitching, and you end up with 2 adjustable elastic bands with clips on both ends. Great for the quilt frame, and they hold really well.

He is a nice guy.

Very nice.. Looks just like the one I paid about 5 bucks for. Go Hubby.
|
I have a question..as a newbie quilter..what are these used for? I have a brand new one in my closet in a box..I tried it once..and just could not get it to work. So back in the box, way back in the closet...to never be touched again.
|
Try some blue painters tape on the clamps and see if that will help with the slippage? I use it alot on my embroidery hoops especially when the fabric is slippery, works every time.
good Luck Suzy |
I have purchased all the pipe and fittings to make one like this but have been too busy sewing to put it together. I purchased the clamps on line and they are 1 inch and fit very tight on the 1 inch pipe. In fact I am afraid too tight but we will see when I get it finished. I am making mine smaller 30 x 20 since only I will be using it and everything has to be smaller in an RV!

Great hubby .
|
I put felt on the tube close to corners=8pcs this gave me 2 options to clip onto I got mine at a Church rummage sale for $3 and its also came in handy for putting food on at large get togethers
|
cut strips of Batting to wrap around it..
|
Maybe one of those swim noodles cut to size and split down the middle to hold it like on the air conditioner pips.

These are quilting frames. You use them to hold the quilt so you can hand quilt. The QSnap frames come in all sizes from picture frame size to floor size. They are very popular because it's easy to take apart when not in use. I use mine to baste my quilts. I do machine quilting and not much hand quilting. |
Your husband is a great one. Glad he did this for you.
|
My hubby made me one also. I use his C clamps that he had in his shop. You can adjust them to be as tight as you want. They come in all different sizes from a place like Home Depot or Lowes.

I use mine for hand quilting. After doing all of my hand quilting in a lap frame, this is so much better. Try it again and you might find that you like it.

That is exactly what I use...when I'm done with it...it folds down and fits perfectly under the bed or in a closet...and lightweight too!!!

I got peal and stick sandpaper and cut it into strips and adhered it to the top of frame and underside of clamps and it held the quilt very tight.
|
I made one, too. Stuck smaller pipes inside each leg, drilled a hole thru the outside one about an inch from the bottom. Drilled holes thru the smaller pipes every inch up the pipe. When assembled, I could adjust the length of the legs by sticking a bolt thru the hole in the outside leg and thru the proper hole on the inside leg. Could make the back legs longer to tilt it, or make all the legs the same length. Never did use it as a quilt frame! Put plywood on top and had an adjustable table!
