I did one kind of like it (without sashing). Mine used only 7 fabrics. I cut 7 squares of equal size and stacked them. Then I cut them into 7 pieces (at random). Now I took the first stack and left it in place. The second stack, I took the top fabric and put it on the bottom. The third stack, I took the first 2 fabrics and put them on the bottom. And so on. This assures that for each block, there is a different layout.

Then I sewed the pieces back together and squared each block. By not using sashing, I lost quite a bit in size.

The same concept should apply to the 9-patch. Just use 9 fabrics and make sure that you have a large enough starting square.

Thanks! that looks to be the same layout - but i 'know' there is going to be some smashingly simple way to add the black trim to each...

Go to JoAnn's, buy some bi-fold bias tape (black), topstitch it down. You have your black.

Thanks everyone for all of the great ideas and suggestions and visuals! I have my plan down, just have to finish a couple of other tops first...I WILL post pics of it soon tho!
