Looking for new small Christmas project ideas.

Has anyone run across any new ideas for small quilting related Christmas gifts. I made these little ornaments one year but need another idea now. Would like to do something besides place mats and mug rugs.

I am giving the ones that sew a pin cushion. I ironed the fabric to freezer paper and run it through my printer. They say "Please Enter Your Pin"

My Step Daughter said I need to put some numbers on them and then on the back side put " Incorrect Pin"

There cute.

Tartan 10-18-2013 06:48 PM

Why not jump on the little fabric boxes bandwagon? They would make a nice container for a bag of homemade cookies, toffee, hot choclate mix....

SandyinZ4 10-18-2013 08:13 PM

I forgot to post the link to my tut for these.
http://www.quiltingboard.com/tutoria...nt-t73219.html They were fun to make for my ladies quilting guild.

StephT...Can you post a picture? :-)

I made some bunting, shapes dangling off a rope. I cut out a hickory nut, and completed then appliquéd owls cut from a piece of fabric. A group of ladies want to make or use them for all manner of ideas except putting them outside to hang up.
Have you seen that thread on here making oven mitts. They were made from circles of fabric and large enough for a mans hand. It was something about making them for a man.

Pagzz 10-19-2013 02:40 AM

I am making these mini mitts. Her downloadable pattern is only $3

Great ideas!

Did you see the tutorial called Candy Baskets? You could make these & fill them with some candy. They lie flat for storage.

Maggiemay 10-19-2013 05:28 AM

I make a lot of bread basket liners. I found the tutorial somewhere on this board. Everyone always likes them- a unique item that most people will use. Here is the link.

I put batting in mine & do some quilting on them.

All great ideas. I love giving and receiving homemade gifts.

I have made Dozens of little pouches called Bridget's Bagettes, that I intend to use as a gift card holder for the holidays!
They were fun to make and easy and quick. You could put either a gift card of any amount in them, say McDonalds for a child (I made some with child theme's on them, some Iowa State University for college students, or victorian style prints for the daughters ) then put the approperate gift card in them such as a Card from Mcdonalds for a small child or I an I tune card for a pre teen or teenager, or a StarBucks card for a college student or a whatever card, you get the idea. I will try to post a picture of these bags I made! I absolutely HAD to quit making them they were addictive kinda like the fabric boxes.... The pattern I used was a Atkinson Designs called Bridget's Bagette's www.atkinsondesigns.com

piepatch 10-19-2013 06:29 AM

IIweezie, Your pouches sound interesting, but I couldn't find the Bridget's Bagette's pattern on the http://Atkinson Design.com site. Would love to see pictures.

Other good ideas here, too.

Try Table runners, luggage tags, little zippered bags.

Somewhere else I saw a folded fabric christmas ornament that looked like prairie points stacked on the edges of a circle (looked like a star).

Martingale sent me this advertisement for the cutest ideas for little gifts. They are all in this book. Everything from knitting bags to key/money holders. You could check them out here.

Not affiliated in any way....

I plan to make a couple casserole carriers and some microwave bowl potholders.
Love to see everyone's ideas!

toverly 10-19-2013 07:49 AM

I have made Christmas pot holders, hot pads and accented dish towels by sewing a fabric strip on the end of a hand towel.

coopah 10-19-2013 11:42 AM

I just saw a blog mentioned somewhere on here (sorry, didn't write it down) where a person had a recipe printed on fabric and then made that into a potholder. So you could do that and use a family recipe or your favorite recipe. They sent to Spoonflower for the recipe printing on fabric, but you could do it on your computer with fabric purchased at most fabric places.

Divokittysmom 10-19-2013 12:17 PM

WOW! Fabulous ideas! I will be following this thread closely! Great Question!!

ro 10-19-2013 03:21 PM

i made a covered casserole just by buying 2 x-large placemats, sewing around 2 sides and adding ribbon to close the opening.

notmorecraft 10-19-2013 10:08 PM

Curling iron/straightner covers, use the insulated wadding intended for pot holders. These are great for putting hair straightners in when youve finished using them and if traveling you can put them straight in your luggage, without worrying about scorching anything. Products shoukd always be unplugged before putting in cover.

Who will be receiving these gifts? Adults? Grands? Kids? A few I can think of, quilted or sewn, are sachets, clutch purses, cosmetic bags, eyeglass sleeves, pillow cases, mini tote bags, slippers, lap quilts (patchwork front or purchased panel with fleece backing - tada! no quilting!)

I, too, will be watching this thread as all this is in my head right now - Christmas, yikes! Almost here!

noveltyjunkie 10-20-2013 04:33 AM

Candle mat and candle
scented hotpad with Christmassy scent.

That's what I'm making. Now I need to think of goodies to put in them.

How about this idea? They are from a pattern called A Little Duffle Do It.
http://www.amazon.com/Little-Duffle-.../dp/B003H2387K
I made these sets using coordinating fat quarters. The pattern has directions for four sizes. I can make the medium, small, and tiny sizes from two fat quarters. I reversed which fabric was on the outside for the small size, so they made a cute coordinated set. They are fun to make, and can be done easily in a morning. Be careful though....they're addictive!

I love the idea of curling iron covers, yes-great for travel.

gramquilter2 10-20-2013 12:47 PM

aprons, decorated dish towels(embroidered/ribbons etc)

If someone has pets you could make the collapsible water bowls --
http://www.craftstylish.com/item/410...r-pet/page/all

I made some of these -- but I enlarged it and used fabric (improvised as I really only wanted the folding directions) to use for some hostess gifts as bread baskets and all. Easy to store them.

New ideas? Is there anything left one or more of us hasn't tried?

You don't really set your candles on a fabric mat, do you? Asks she who almost set her kitchen afire a few decades ago with a silk candle ring. (kept table cloth with 3 holes to remind myself)

Love to see everyone's ideas!

I've made some with kitchen towels, the themal silvery stuff and another fabric. Sorry, can't post picks.

I was thinking...gifts for grandkids and quilter friends. These will be perfect. I appreciate your giving the link to order. Thanks!

I made a pattern today and made 2 and have 12 more cut ready to put together. I did modify the sewing a bit over the video. I made the first one as directed leaving the space to turn. Once I made a regular pocket pot holder and we left an opening at the bottom of the pocket for turning. MUCH better and when all is done, the hole, when sewn closed, is inside the pocket, not a problem turning the bulk this way.
Thank you so much for the video link, I have a purchased pattern but wanted to make them a bit larger.

LOL, just realized I wrote "picks" and not "pics". When all else fails, read my siggy line.

LLWinston44 10-20-2013 09:19 PM

Im so hoping to find some new ideas (to me). Last year I made the microwave bowl holders which were, and still are, a hit. Its going to be hard to compete with it this year! Lol

iwillquilt 10-21-2013 05:58 AM

I am making pillow cases and matching stuffed animals for my grandkids this year. For the boys I used batman and superman with a complementing small print fabric or solid. Sorry no pictures yet.

somewhere among my stuff I've got 5-6 stuffed animals cut out. Wonder where? But they won't match anything. I need to get back to making some pillow cases. They are so easy and I have a bunch of them cut out, too.

I have 8 granddaughters, and found 8 muslin bunnies cut and started in my UFO box from 15 years ago when I traveled the craft show circuit!! Guess what each girl will be getting? Now what to do for the 6 boys remains a problem
