I have a Bernina 1090. It's one of the first computerized machines they made, but that computer part isn't so up in your face as the later models.
I've had mine since the mid-90s, and I have had no trouble with it. It's reliable and despite the attractions of the later models, I have no real reason to upgrade, save for that tempting larger space between the needle and the right body of the machine. Not worth a couple of thousand dollars to me. I remember reading somewhere that someone who had a later model Bernina wouldn't ever give up her 1090. I wish I could remember or find the rest of it. Here's a review of the 1090: http://www.sewingmachinereviewer.com/bernina-1090.html Hope this helps! |
I've had my Bernina 930 for 27 years & I'm keeping it :). Go to the Bernina USA site, click on find a dealer & check out a few & see what they have available.

I purchased an older Bernina (1998) model last year from a local dealer and have been happy with my puchase.
It is Bernina virtuosa 150, I use it to piece with and use a walking foot to quilt charity quilts. You can't go wrong which ever Bernina you choose. |

I would recommend a 1260. |
My first Bernina was a 1090, I bought it new in 1991, these are great machines. They have a different bobbin type than the embroidery machines and they sew really well. It was $1400 new so you should be able to find a used one for a good price.

I just got a 930 via a very nice quilter on this board. It came in the case with tons of accessories. Expect to pay between $500-1000. Any less is a steal. It's all mechanical, so no motherboard to go out. Sweet stitch. If it's your first Bernina, you'll instantly "get" what all the fuss is about. Good luck!

By checking the completed listings on ebay, you can get a pretty good idea of what these older Berninas are selling for. Most are going for at least $500, though some lucky person in my area was able to pick up a 930 off Craigslist for $250.
