I'm told that this pattern is from the 1930 time period, and am looking for a pattern to make it , or where I can find it. Can anyone help?

some say it is called Engagement Ring or Diamond Ring

SandraJennings 07-24-2007 12:07 PM

Have looked at those names but can't find it ....will continue to search...have several books with over 5000 blocks listed....will take a litttle time...ok?

Country Quilter 07-24-2007 12:17 PM

I did a search too and could find Grandmothers Engagement Ring pattern but it wasn't like this one...I bit different.....beautiful pattern....hope you can find it!

SandraJennings 07-24-2007 12:39 PM

Have downloaded the picture you gave....It is an interesting block....looks like they melded two together as the wedding ring shape is very apparent and yet it is squared with the other one...Cool will keep looking....Another thing you can do is trace the block...and then use graph paper or EQ5/6 if you have either and create pattern and templates from there...Maybe Patrice could assist you....if so...would be interested in copy of pattern. Also check Library for books about patterns of that time.
PS...I think I have some of those fabrics.

patricej 07-24-2007 01:58 PM

since Sandra has some of the fabrics in the photo, this may be a modern pattern that honors the 30s style. the pattern may be an unpublished original.

Recreating the pattern would be very easy but I'd have to know more about the quilt in the photo before i jumped to the conclusion the design was in the pulic domain.

SandraJennings 07-24-2007 01:59 PM

Patrice...they are from my grandmothers fabrics. But I too think it may be an original pattern...the curve remains in the block which if it were a new pattern is not as likely....

patricej 07-24-2007 02:48 PM

ok. Granny's fabrics take it back to the comfort zone.

it looks like a cross between a wedding ring and a Friendship Knot from 1932.

SandraJennings 07-24-2007 03:31 PM

BINGO! Sister! You hit it...it is a friendship Knot and wedding ring...It is the placement of the colors that tweak it a bit. It is an interesting meld of the two. and it is how she/he utilized the arc to join the pieces that made it harder to find. Wil endavor to get my printer hooked back in so can send the pics to you and maybe you can sort a pattern? GAME? The only other that comes close is the Wreath of Lilies. Will send you both see what you think.K?

This site talk about this type of quilt and says early part of 20th century for a date

http://www.womenfolk.com/quilt_pattern_history/wedring.htm
this seems like a single ring pattern and I read that the double wedding ring was developed from this

SandraJennings 07-24-2007 05:12 PM

You just gotta love how we gals come together to help. It is so cool. I like how they pieced the inside arc....my patterns all show it single color..Gives it a whole new dimension.

Knot Sew 07-24-2007 05:26 PM

I read that some people made the ring and then appliqed them in place. I like this , I will look for the pattern directions. Is this in the public domain? :?: :-D

ceannastahr 07-24-2007 06:47 PM

I looked it up and this is what I found

Below is a list of the pattern sheets mimeographed and sold through Kentucky Farmers Home Journal from 1938 to 1945. For more information about Patty Shannon, see the October 2004 issue of QNM.

Date Pattern Description
Dec 1938 Rising Sun Pieced Traditional Design

ahem.

download the second file.

i didn't design it. i created a replica. given its apparent age, i felt safe assuming i wouldn't violate a copyright. if i guessed incorrectly, i'm sure somebody's lawyer will be in touch.

vicki reno 07-25-2007 04:17 AM

Thanks Patrice! You are such a sweetie to do this for all of us :!:  I'm going to print out 2 copies when I get home, caus I know my sis will want one too and she has trouble with gremlins in her computer sometimes.
Thanks again

SandraJennings 07-25-2007 06:03 AM

Patrice, again I am in awe. Thank you for making this pattern. It is just begging to be pieced. I really like the old traditional blocks.

mimisharon 07-25-2007 07:05 AM

Beautiful, gorgeous, wonderful, such talent.......so wish the Lord had given me some design talent, but I'm grateful to Him for the little ablities I did get, honest.

You are all so wonderful and responsive!!

bj9patch 07-25-2007 09:33 AM

Check this link out. It has a picture of a quilt with that design and where for get further information.

patricej 07-25-2007 10:23 AM

thanks for the compliments. :P

everything we've seen so far points to its being one individual's adaptation of a wedding ring. The adaptation was very likely inspired by the Friendship Wreath/Knot. however, the circles are bigger and more "open" than in the wreath. also the arrows point inward so the circles touch each other.

i think they're both pretty. i feel an adaptation of my own comin' on.

vicki reno 07-25-2007 10:29 AM

Don't know what we'd do without you!

patricej 07-25-2007 04:07 PM

you'd do just fine, but it makes me feel special to know you think otherwise. :P

quiltcrazy 07-26-2007 09:34 AM

WOW, thats it, now can you tell me where you found it? I'd surely love to make it. I hit the download and nothing came up. Do you have the web site?
Thank You
Quiltcrazy :D

quiltcrazy 07-26-2007 09:53 AM

I finally did get to open, thanks again, aslo do I have to add the 1/4" seam allowance or is it part of the templates?
quitlcrazy ( Donna) :)

patricej 07-26-2007 11:19 AM

the seam allowance should show up when you open the file. to make sure they show up when you print it, click on the "Advanced" button in Acrobat Reader and put a check next to "print as image". set it to the highest dpi.

also, to make sure the templates come out the right size, set page scaling to "none"

i didnt' get that pattern from a website. i did it myself.

:) So happy to have found this pattern and this website--Thank you.

SEVENCUBS 04-03-2008 08:25 AM

quiltcrazy, what is the quilting design? I can see along the outside of quilt, but how did they do the inside? I would love to do a reproduction quilt with that pattern!! I love those old traditional patterns.
Thank so much, Patrice for the pattern that I could download :D That was sweet of you.

Bill'sBonBon 04-03-2008 03:18 PM

WOW!!!!!!!!!! Thank you. I downloaded and printed it out. I was going to do a double wedding riing as soon as I finished this last baby Quilt. this is going to be my next project. I will post as soon as I get it done. I love it. Bonnie

Bill'sBonBon 04-25-2008 12:45 PM

For any one doing this pattern for a 12 inch block, be sure you measure after you have printed it out. I made a block using the 12 inch pattern. It maybe because my printer is CHEAP!CHEAP! The one that has the seam allowance. when I printed it out it was 1/8 inch off on the corner piecees. At the end where the fine point is . Allso on these corner pieces I added an extra quarter inch on the sides where your other quarter inch line is. I know this sounds confusing. The block is beatiful. For some reason I cannot get the picture I took small enough to post. The software on this computer will not make my pic. pixils any less. When I figure it out I will post a picture of this block as I made it without adding the extra. and after I added. The rest of the pieces were just perfect. Thanks again for this block I really love it my 2 daughters are going to love it for Christmas.
Bonnie

patricej 04-25-2008 01:11 PM

did you make sure to set page scaling to "none" before you printed?

Bill'sBonBon 04-26-2008 08:18 AM

dont really remember if I did or not. come to think abt. probably didnt. but it is still a good thing to measure any printed out pattern before it is cut. I love the block. I sewed my first curves and they turned out fine. I have always been uneasy about curves but found out as long as the 1/4 is right it isnt to bad. Later today I am going to put my picture software on this laptop. If I can then I can post the Picture. Bonnie

Bill'sBonBon 04-26-2008 08:18 AM

I am using a very cheap printer for this laptop. My HP Photo Smart I have know trouble when I am printing or adjusting a picture. This laptop is very overloaded already. So until I can get me another. I just have to make do. Bonnie

mgshaw 04-26-2008 02:59 PM

McCalls Quilting ran that pattern in their april 1997 issue, it is called Friendship knott. I have had this earmarked for years to one day make.
