If you put Be Colorful or Jaqueline de Jongg in your search engine you will find sites that sell her designs. She also has her own web site. She does wondeful designs but I don,t hace that much time right now.

marymm 06-24-2012 07:43 AM

Oh, boy, are those challenging. I can't recommend a specific pattern, but please do an image search for patterns by Judy Niemeyer. She does gorgeous quilts.

dglvr 06-24-2012 07:43 AM

Holy cow you must be a super quilter to make those. Those are beautiful. Good luck.

New York Beauty? A friend made this using a kit from Keepsake and added more of her own fabrics. It's beautiful but what a lot of work. It seems to me it is paper pieced. Guess it would have to be with all of those fine points.

dunster 06-24-2012 07:51 AM

I had to chuckle at your request - "can anyone help me?" Help is definitely what I would need to tackle those quilts. Help with everything!

mary quilting 06-24-2012 08:15 AM

Dunster - I don't think YOU would need help with that quilt - if you chose to do it.

bearisgray 06-24-2012 08:51 AM

There was someone on this board that had made (or was working on) a quilt similar to that. I don't remember her name, now.

She said it took a LOT of concentration.

Looks like it would be an expensive one to make.

I have made her designs .. they are not for the faint of quilting heart !! Some of her patterns do NOT include the papers . I know they were working to include papers in the most recent printings , but do be careful if buying on line or in person that the papers are inculded. THe first one I did was VERY problematic ... the instructions called for the desings to be traced onto your paper... there is a copyright printed on each page .. so copying was not ... well easy. Plus many of the designs were on paper so large I hade to use paper typically used for architectural prints. It ended up costing me an additional $30.00 . The designer has limited English abilites ... and who ever translates .. is not a quilter/sewer.. there were terms in the instructions that had no relevance to the pattern.
I know they are were working to improve but if you happen to purchase a pattern that was printed prior to the improvements ... it can be a struggle.
There were some yardage requirements I did not find clear enough for my purposes.. One yardage requirement on the pattern just said "Lots" ... what the heck does that mean... !
Spending the $$$ for the patterns I had the expectation the sewing /quilting would be challenging ... not getting through the pattern itself.
Her designs are beautful !

Thanks for all the wonderful information. I made my daughter a quilt a few years ago that was all paper pieced and it turned out great. The pattern did have some problems that caused me a lot of frustrations. These patterns look a bit more then my skill level can handle. Thanks for the heads up on possible problems. I think I'm going to look for something a little easier. I think New York Beauty would be a good starting point.

I have a geese circling paper pieced block I found online free ---- that will be challenging enough. Good luck and by the way to the designer ---beautiful work!

fairydawn 06-24-2012 12:17 PM

Ivory Spring recently had a free pattern on her site made by Quilting Treasures. It was called Sausalito and has some similarities to your 2 quilts but looks a lot easier. You could check it out or get some ideas and design your own.

tiptrinket 06-24-2012 12:37 PM

There is an author...Karen K. Stone that does quilts that have this look. She does beautiful work. Those quilts you are looking at are beautiful.
Paper piecing takes a lot of time...Ask me how I know. But, it is really something to be proud of when you are done!

Have you thought about designing your own in EQ if you have it? Then print out the paper piecing instructions.

Minnisewta 06-24-2012 05:04 PM

I don't have EQ. I guess I don't really know what it is so I assume I don't have it. I think I will do a few New York Beauties and add more stuff and see what happens. I have done paper piecing and like it but don't want to get myself in to deep that I can't get out. Thanks to everyone that has given me ideas and web sites.

I am working on one now based on a Judy Niemeyer. I am changing the layout to suit myself. It is paper pieced and not hard if you can PP. I bought the pattern and am using fabrics from my stash. This is what it looks like so far.

lfstamper 06-25-2012 05:28 AM

WOW! Gorgeous designs and a ton of work. Please show us when you are working on them. Would love to see the progress.

on the river, That is beautiful!

If you want to create your own designs on this theme, check out the mariner's compass programs from Quilt Pro. Creating the designs is not terribly difficult once you select the elements you want, then play with distorting them.

WMUTeach 06-26-2012 04:43 AM

Wowzers those are beautiful! Enjoy the process, I will just sit back and watch.

Her website lists online and LQS that have her patterns: http://www.becolourful.nl/en/index.htm

psailer 06-26-2012 06:59 AM

they are both beautiful but way over my knowledge.. enjoy...

Pat75 06-26-2012 07:13 AM

I love paper piecing.Yes it is time consuming but go for it and celibrate the colors and when you are done make a quilt that is a no brainer. That is what I do.

linmid 06-26-2012 08:00 AM

This is the site for the New York Beauty BOM. It might still be available for free. http://www.sewsweetness.com/2012/02/...ilt-along.html

linmid 06-26-2012 08:08 AM

I just went to the site and it looks like it is still available.

Minnisewta 06-26-2012 08:24 AM

I have done paper piecing and I'm sure I could do what you are doing. Looks beautiful by the way. II don't want all the circles to be the same so I think if I go with New York Beauty patterns I could change the lay out like you are doing. Thanks for the idea.

charhend 06-26-2012 09:48 AM

Could she have picked a harder one!! LOL

gollytwo 06-26-2012 09:58 AM

Try Googling Karen Combs, Judy Mathieson and New York Beauties.
I have a dim recollection that Benartex makes a foundation fabric for New York Beauties - would make it alot easier.

grammatjr 06-26-2012 10:41 AM

Wow, I have always wanted to do a New York Beauty, but not got my nerve up yet.
I hope you and your daughter are real brave and experienced as the ones you marked are rated 5 & 6 difficutly level!

Here are some free blocks, to get you started. I think I would use some scraps to test a block or two before buying enough fabric to do an entire quilt, and then find out it drove me nuts to do that much piecing!

http://quilterscornerclub.tripod.com..._patterns.html

Good luck, and be sure to show us what you do!

mom-6 06-26-2012 11:07 AM

grammatjr - that link has some fabulous designs! But I don't think I'm ready to tackle them yet...think I'm still at about a 2 or 3 difficulty level or least comfort level.

red aloha 06-26-2012 02:33 PM

Wow! "Difficulty 6*********" I've never seen that before! I think it's New York Beauty on a kaleidoscope. Good luck is right. I'd have to quit my job to do that one.

homecaregiver 06-26-2012 02:41 PM

I love the 2 patterns you had a link to and I love to paper piece so maybe I should think about trying something on this order of pattern. Good luck on your search for the perfect pattern.
