I'm noticing that many of you have full blown quilting machines. Do you mostly do your own or do you have a business?

Sadiemae 11-02-2010 09:07 AM

At the present time, I do my own.

Lynnejean 11-02-2010 09:09 AM

I do my own.

Quilter7x 11-02-2010 09:11 AM

I just have regular plain old sewing machines. No room in my sewing room for a long arm and no $$ to get one. **sigh**

However, I got a used Bernina back in the spring and it does an excellent job of quilting. I've done two baby quilts and several wall hangings on it so far (just the quilting part, the piecing was done on my Janome).

quilter41 11-02-2010 09:23 AM

I have a PC Quilter and no where to set it up. So I just quilt on my Pfaff and send the big ones out

eparys 11-02-2010 09:26 AM

I do my own stuff and do some charity quilts for Linus. I know of several ladies that do those quilts and do not have the machine to quilt with so I have volunteered the batting and the quilting time - in exchange I get to practice on my free motion quilting on the machine.

Diannia 11-02-2010 09:29 AM

I just got a LA and do my own quilting (or will after I do a bit of practicing first!)

I am getting a new machine this week that I will be able to quilt my own quilts. What is the reasoning for using one machine for piecing an another for quilting? Is there any reason not to use the same machine for both? The lady at the store that sold me the machine does the same thing. I didn't ask her. Just wondering if I'm missing something.

champagnebubbles 11-02-2010 09:47 AM

I have a mega quilter I am learning to use for my quilts and family

roseville rose 11-02-2010 09:52 AM

I have one machine set up for piecing and my Bernina set up with the BSR for FMQ.

Good question, I should have clarified. I have a Janome that I bought brand new about 13 years ago. I got a Janome Jem about 5 years ago to take to classes (that's a great light weight machine). I had the opportunity to use a Bernina last year in a class where machines were provided and couldn't believe how wonderful the FMQ stitches were. I get "whiskers" on the backside when doing FMQ around curves on the Janome, but not at all on the Bernina.

When I bought the Janome, it was expensive so I took every class I possibly could to get the most use out of the machine. I truly love that machine and will never give it up. I know how to do just about anything on that machine.

The Bernina 180E has wider feed dogs than a standard machine and reviews of it say that the wider feed dogs seem to want to "eat" the fabric when doing 1/4" piecing. I haven't done enough 1/4" piecing to really tell if it is doing that, but I'm so comfortable with the Janome, that I do all the piecing there.

I will be taking more lessons on my Bernina, hopefully soon. I was amazed at the differences between two brands of sewing machines!

I send mine out. As long as there are LA quilters close by they can do mine. God Bless all the LA Quilters!!!!

quilter41 11-02-2010 10:41 AM

Oh my gosh I am sewing machine poor. I have a Featherweight that I use for classes, a Viking Lily I use for pieceing, a Pfaff that I use for quilting(because of IDT), a Viking 950E for embroidery, and a Baby Lock Quilters Pro for the PC Quilter that I have never set up(no room for it). I often run the embroidery machine while piecing on my Lily.

clem55 11-02-2010 10:49 AM

I have one that is used for everything I might do, my new Janome 9700. I do have a featherweight, but I never use it anymore, havent for years. So I guess you would say I am really machine poor.

Got pictures?? =)

KathyAire 11-02-2010 12:36 PM

I had a full size Gammill Classic long arm for five years. Sold it and now I have a full size A-1. My long arm is strictly for my own pleasure, not for business. No customer quilts.

I understand. Once you start doing it for others it is not a hobby anymore. Then it is a job, that is why I retired so I don't want to work!!! Quilting is for enjoying. That is why I send my out, I just can't do it with my hands...

krisgray 11-02-2010 03:11 PM

About a machine for piecing and one quilting: my answer is that I get tired of changing the feet, the thread and the bobbin. Sometimes I have the time or the inclination to piece and sometimes I want to quilt.

Jingle 11-02-2010 03:46 PM

I do all my own quilting, all sizes on one of my 2 Juki TL98QE machines, would have a LA but, house isn't big enough.

SuziC 11-02-2010 03:53 PM

I do all my own quilting on a regular machine. I have a Janome and a Singer that i use. I would never have enough space for a full size quilt machine.

hperttula123 11-02-2010 04:20 PM

I do try to sell some of my quilts, but mostly I just do quilts for family and friends. I have two husqvarna's(one does embroidery), two sergers, and a feather weight(haven't used it yet, not enough room to set everything up until my room is done). I love having so many machines, because I can sew with my kids. I'm gonna teach them all I can while they are young, maybe it will stick with them so have have sewing buddies when they are older..lol.

sewTinker 11-02-2010 05:44 PM

I have a bernina 180 that I use for piecing and quilting. I feel so lucky to have it. I also have a featherweight that I take to sit 'n sews, classes, and when I travel. I would love to set it up and use it for piecing, but my little quilting corner has no space for it for such fanciness. lol...

Shelley 11-02-2010 05:50 PM

I have a Bernina 180 for piecing and an A1 for LA quilting. The LA is for business, but it really is fun. I get to quilt on quilts that I will never live long enough to piece.

It's like having kids come stay for the weekend!! It's fun when they are there, but it's always good to send them home. Pictures of my studio are on my blog, the July 20, 2010 post. It's currently only one post down.

littlehud 11-02-2010 07:10 PM

I have a Juki on a Grace frame for quilting. When I got my frame people at work started asking if I wanted to quilt for them. I want my quilting to be my hobby not my job so I said no.

Gramof6 11-02-2010 07:46 PM

I have a Bernina 140 & the 240, that I piece on. I have a couple of Featherweights to piece on as well. We then have an A-1 Elite LA to quilt on. We do our own quilts which some are donated to Charity.

alleyoop1 11-03-2010 02:47 AM

What is a PC quilter?

Ditto. Too busy making tops!!

GammaLou 11-03-2010 04:46 AM

I send my quilting out to a local person with a long arm machine. It is computerized and does many designs. That works fine for me!

Connie in CO 11-03-2010 04:48 AM

Well,i have 1 Phaff i piece and quilt with.1 Babylock Estante,1 brother,both embroidery.Then a older little Brother embroidery machine and 1 serger

SLHughes 11-03-2010 04:52 AM

I just have an old basic machine that I use. Nothing big or fancy here. Maybe someday.

Mariposa 11-03-2010 04:58 AM

I sew on a Pfaff, and quilt on my HQ LA machine. Love both! I sew for myself, but have done a few quilts for others too.

Suzi 11-03-2010 04:59 AM

Oh Shelley -- if only I lived closer to you I would clean your studio for you every day just to be there ...... what a delightful place to spend your hours. Quilting in church ---- could anything be more perfect??

reginalovesfabric 11-03-2010 05:01 AM

I have a quilting machine on a 14' frame, takes up half my den and I quilt for a few people but mostly for myself and the "giveaways" I do, I still work full time

dgmoby 11-03-2010 05:09 AM

I do Soldier charity quilting for all the wonderful local ladies who piece the tops...and then my own :)

I believe in being a contributing member of society. This is my way of giving, since I'm blessed enough to have a LA, and to not have to work.

Seems the soldiers are keeping me pretty busy!

Well, I think that I am sewing machine poorer that you! I only have a Singer Scholastic, which I use for every thing, piecing, and FMQ. It is light weight and I take it with me to classes also.

ksea 11-03-2010 05:50 AM

I keep hoping to see a LA quilt machine for sale on this board.

LOL!!! You're more than welcome to come vacuum! Maybe I need to put out a sign, "Will quilt for vacuuming"!

It is a wonderful old building! It has it's issues- there are only 5 electrical outlets on that floor, and the LA shares with the kitchen downstairs. But it is a great place to work!! Thanks for looking!

Ms Grace 11-03-2010 07:42 AM

At the present time, I do my own.
