I too, thought of the Carpenter's Star and perhaps the Churn Dash with the birds print featured in the center. as well as the 10 minute block I see these have already been posted.

Most men love the log cabin block.

If you're opting for scrappy, the Tennessee block is fast, easy & looks good in masculine colors. Use your 4.5" square for your scrappy blocks.
Here's the link for the pattern. http://quilterscache.com/T/TennesseeBlock.html |

I'd say "What's your favorite color?", he'd say "You better move that bush out away from the house or it will die"... I'd say "So what color is your living room?", he'd say "Did you get out to vote today?", I'd say "Stop changing the subject, I asked you what your favorite color was.", he'd say "pastels" with a chuckle, I'd say "Mr. Burdell, stop giving me a hard time, what colors do you like?", he'd say "I don't want ANYTHING, I don't have any room.". And on and on it went. Talk about thick-headed. I thought I was thick-headed. LOL This man is going to drive me crazy. I just want to do something nice for him. NOW what do I do??????

He's actually very active, cooks and bakes for himself (even shares family recipes with me!). His brother who is also the neighbor on the other side 'disowned' him (they don't talk). I don't think he's used to anybody doing anything for him, which makes me want to do it more. ;)
Geez, this guy is impossible to do for!!! So, just go ahead and make him the quilt of your choice and leave it on his doorstep. He'll have to take it in, right? Oh wait, maybe you could find a way to bring he and his brother together? No, better not get involved in family stuff. What a predicament!!! Can you give him a hug? lol Wait, maybe since he is so into flowers you could find some exotic plant that he could not possible have and buy it for him. You might have to go somewhere exotic to do that though. Oh, good idea. OK, I give up! |
I think a D9P would be perfect, using your focus material as
the four corners, so they wouldn't get cut, and use other corresponding material with it. Browns, Greens, Tans, can't wait to see what you come up with! |

Guys are pretty easy to impress. I sewed together simple squares(in my avatar) and it illicited a tearful response from the very manly recipient.

I think I found the perfect pattern for a man. Muscles, flowers, and a broom. Ha ha, couldn't resist! Every time I read my own Subject line, I have to giggle. :)
So many good ideas. I just keep going around and around with trying to make a decision. I have another idea, too. Eleanor Burns has a simple Morning Star pattern in her Quilting Through the Seasons book. Mr. Burdell was in the Navy, as was his brother and father. He is very into the political-thing, so I thought perhaps he would like a patriotic quilt?? I have some of the darker, richer red & blue tones, and maybe use a cream instead of white? Hum... I spoke to him again yesterday, and again he changed the subject on the color topic. He sure is a tough bird. I sure hope I can make up my mind! I figure I'll embroider his name on it so he CAN'T give it back. SIMPLE PATTERN FOR A MAN |
I think the fabric with the birds is a great idea to start with. Along with greens and other bright colors

My husband loves to camp, fish, hunt, etc. I found some fabric that had log cabins, a guy fishing, camping, deer, moose, bears, etc. I bought some plaid homespun - blue, green and red and cut it all into 8 1/2" squares and then just randomly sewed them together. He loves it!

Yeah, I think I'll stick with the 'manly' colors. Seems like he's ticked off at the country most of the time, anyway. ;) I really like the browns and greens and tans. Ya know, earthy man colors.
