My very kind neighbor is an older gentlemen (maybe upper 60s?), and since we built our new home and moved in he has continually brought me over several (I mean a LOT) new plants and flowers from his house to plant here (he lives all alone). We're talking rose bushes, lavender, iris, plum hyacins, snowdrops, lilac bushes, yuccas, daffodils, hyssop, sweet bush... and the list goes on (and on). I think you get the picture. I'd really like to make him a nice lap quilt, and I'm looking for ideas of simple patterns. I have a really nice wild bird fabric (brown) that I thought he may enjoy (he's very 'outdoorsy'). If anyone has any ideas for a simple man quilt for the kind man, I'd appreciate it. :)

Since you've got a print in mind, I'd pick coordinating fabrics and do something like YBR or Turning Twenty.

soccertxi 05-16-2011 06:42 AM

How about a Warm Wishes? You can pick colors from the fabric you have and still be able to showcase the fabric itself. Its one of my favorite go to patterns. Looks nice and it is easy! Check out the Quiltmaker magazine free patterns. It was a Linus pattern one year I think

Grama Lehr 05-16-2011 06:43 AM

Oh my!! Older at late 60?? You must be a youngster!!

kathy 05-16-2011 06:47 AM

i did a 10 minute block quillt in darker colors and i think it looks manly, or at least a bit masculine

TonnieLoree 05-16-2011 06:51 AM

I made a tumbling block out blues for my former husband when he was a truck driver. I knew it was going to get abused in the sleeper and wouldn't see a washing machine for months.

mzsooz 05-16-2011 06:51 AM

Gee... I wish I would have had a pattern for a man before I met DH!

Dingle 05-16-2011 06:59 AM

I really like the D9P for a man. I have done 2 tops so far. One for my Hubby and the other one for a 65 year old man. They look like alot of piecing but very easy.

Looks like you have a nice focus fabric ... careful you don't chop it up so small you lose the beauty!

I had already been thinking of an assortment of plant/flower fabrics put together. There's lots that are garden like and not ultra-feminine.

One that I like to see is a focus fabric with log cabins around it to frame it up. And additional log cabins added to make a combo pattern. There was a beautiful one posted not so long ago by one of our posters!

Or, you could use the trellis effect around any focus fabric that I did with this quilt. Right colours, still would be quite he-man!!!

A rail fence is gender neutral, and pretty easy yo do.

Yeah, sorry about that!! I thought about it after I sent it. Notice I DID say old-ER, not old. tee hee. Yeah, I guess I'm a youngster at 40.

The pattern on the bird fabric I have is a bit larger, so I'd probably need a larger area in the quilt design. It has a brown "manly" background. Keep the ideas coming - I really appreciate them!

Oooooh, I love this trellis pattern! Any idea where I could find it? It would give me a lot of room to display the birds, and maybe I could put a pine cone border around it to frame it, and two contrasting more neutral colors.

Still thinking...

I think Warm Wishes would work well. It is great to show a focus fabric, and it's easy!

QuiltE 05-16-2011 07:55 AM

Maybe show us a picture of the fabric .... ideas will flow even more!

Wanted to post a picture of the main fabric I'd like to use. Please excuse the wrinkles, I had pre-washed it. :) I'm thinking of maybe pulling the oranges and blues to go with it?

That'll make for a great man-quilt!

Happy Treadler 05-16-2011 08:29 AM

This one looks pretty simple and 'manly': http://quilting.about.com/od/quiltpa...lt-Pattern.htm

twistedstitcher 05-16-2011 08:39 AM

This is my favorite pattern when I don't want to cut the focus fabric in little pieces. You'd just need two coordinating fabrics.

I think that what ever you do deside to do he will be most appreciative.

WOW, that looks like it would really be quick to make.

My favorite quickie quilt is a Log Cabin using 2 1/2 inch strips.

Yes it is and it's really easy to adjust the size as well by cutting your strips shorter/longer or narrower/wider.

I like this pattern ... would give almost a an attic windows almost 3-D look with the right fabrics.

You should include a bird house in one of the blocks!! :)

quilterella 05-17-2011 02:19 AM

How about a ninepatch alternating with a snowball block of your focus fabric.

Weenween 05-17-2011 03:06 AM

how about Gentlemens Bowtie. Its not real hard and very nice for a man or big boy.

jitkaau 05-17-2011 03:11 AM

It seems this man likes to interact using his love of gardening as a nice "excuse" to communicate. Why not make him a friendship braid quilt and explain or tell him the name of the pattern?

I was thinking about this option, too, ever since someone here recently posted an absolutely GORGEOUS one. The snowball block would be big enough to show off the fabric.

Any other ideas?? SEW many options...

This would be my suggestion as well.

gal288 05-17-2011 05:14 AM

I like to match my fabric to the quilt block name, here are some I found at quilterscache that have birds themes and are simple blocks.

Hope this helps
