Hello ladies! This is not my first quilt, but it is the first I made with paper piecing (the blocks, though, not the border). Now that the top is done, I am at a loss on how to quilt this. My usual group was cancelled due to snow, so I thought I would ask all of you since you're always so helpful to others. Thanks for taking a look!

OMG!! Thats gorgeous!

patricej 01-03-2010 08:00 AM

i am green  with envy!!! gosh that's gorgeous!!!

if i had the skill - which i don't - i might do simple triangular motifs in the light areas, with a similar motif in the center. featherish fans that come to a point rather than round. the center would be square, on point. for the dark areas, i'd just do a bit of tacking to make sure the cabin logs keep their shape during use and washing.

now that you have an amateur's opinion, here's hoping our members with expert skills pile on with some better advice.

whatever you choose to do, i hope it'll be designed to show off that fabulous piecing.

Thanks all for saying. I'm going to be keeping this one for myself. My mother has taken the last three that I've made, so this one is all mine!! Thanks for the suggestions Patrice. I like the idea about the feathers. Off to the books I go to find one!

diannemc 01-03-2010 08:35 AM

Wow I love it! beautiful!!!

That is absolutely drop dead gorgeous. (You must have had lots of help holding it up for the picture.) I agree with Patrice's suggestion of feathers. They can look smashing on a log cabin quilt. Below is a picture I took at the 2008 Sisters Quilt show inside the Stitchin' Post quilt shop. THIS IS NOT MY QUILT!!! (I wish it were.) This is Judy Martin's Snake River Log Cabin, and it is a wonderful example of feathers in the light areas with just SID in the dark areas.

littlehud 01-03-2010 08:49 AM

Beautiful quilt. The feathers would be so pretty in the light area.

Ninnie 01-03-2010 09:26 AM

Since I ma just now learning machine quilting, not much help, but just wanted to say how Gorgeous your top is!!

meemersmom 01-03-2010 11:05 AM

Thanks for all your input (and thanks for the picture, Dunster!). I'll be practicing feathers this afternoon, just as soon as I finish putting together my new airlift cabinet --- Santa was very good to me this year!!

amma 01-03-2010 11:31 AM

Beautiful quilt!!! WOW!

jljack 01-03-2010 09:02 PM

It is indeed quite a beauty!!! Beautiful piecing. As for the feathers.....I am still aspiring to those. I don't have that skill yet.....still trying but it's going slow for me!!!

Harmony 01-03-2010 09:05 PM

Your quilt is breathtaking! I'd take it to a good machine quilter and give her free rein!

LucyInTheSky 01-03-2010 09:08 PM

so beautiful! It really pops

Sandy1951 01-03-2010 09:21 PM

I don't have any suggestions for the quilting; I just want to say I think your quilt is gorgeous! I love the colors and the pattern. Is it a Judy Martin pattern? She's designed several that combine stars and log cabin blocks. I don't blame you for keeping it!

woody 01-03-2010 10:06 PM

I love it. Wow it just gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry I can't help with quilt suggestions but I'm sure whatever you do it will look stunning!

meemersmom 01-03-2010 11:11 PM

This isn't really a pattern --- I've seen almost 100 different ways to set log cabin blocks; they play well together once you have a big enough pile of them to move around. I picked up the border technique in a class. I immediately thought of the star medallion center.
I appreciate all your comments and kudos --- you make me blush. I might have to post pictures of my latest postage stamp size TATW quilt when it's done. Thanks!

earthwalker 01-03-2010 11:16 PM

Brilliant quilt...I am a beginner machine quilter too, but those feathers sure look good (and terribly difficult!). Please, please post pictures of your postage stamp...

meemersmom 01-03-2010 11:20 PM

I will be sure to post those pics. This is my fourth one so far. They're all entitled some version or other of "What Was I Thinking" --- the most recent is in all florals. It's for a neighbor who has beautiful gardens and is always sharing both plants, and advice. It's going to be 91x91 -- that's 8,281 pieces (which is where the 'what was I thinking' part comes from!!).

sandpat 01-04-2010 06:42 AM

Oh gorgeous! I agree with Patrice....my immediate thought when I saw it was some triangular motifs in the lighter areas to make sure the star actually does pop out! Feathers are perfect for that and actually are not hard to do. I can't wait to see it all quilted!

Katie 01-04-2010 07:28 AM

I have no suggestion for quilting it but it is so beautiful

pal 01-04-2010 09:58 AM

Beautiful quilt!

Jingle 01-04-2010 01:12 PM

I quilt all my quilts with a large stipple and they always hold their shapes, points, log cabins and all other shapes. The key is to pin the sandwich about every 3-4". Your quilt is absolutely gorgeous !!!

granny216 01-04-2010 02:55 PM

WOW! beautiful piecing, thank you for sharing.

tucky46 01-05-2010 06:07 AM

wow...absolutely beautiful....I would just go with the stitch in the ditch method

Zephyr 01-05-2010 06:18 AM

That is really nice. I love all the colors and particularly like the way the star in the border are not all in a line. I never know how to finish them either but I think you've come to the right site to get some ideas.

Ditter43 01-05-2010 07:13 AM

WOW!!! How beautiful!! Ilove the whole thing...the borders really add to the pazazz!!!

No quilting suggestions bc i'm awful at deciding, but i love your quilt! also the cat in your avatar looks just like our Bandit who has been gone about 5 years now.

margaret light 01-05-2010 07:23 AM

That is such a gorgeous quilt, I don't have any suggestions since I am just a meanderer and stitch in the ditch, but I did want you to know how beautiful I think your quilt is. Bea
