I think that Moda packages something called scrap bags:
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from...Text=&_sacat=0 I save all my larger scraps so I have a few boxes overflowing. People give their scraps away for free I think under another section on this QB. You might want to check that out. |
I've never heard of scrap bags before. Is this a good deal? $12 for 12 oz? Just curious!<script type="text/javascript" src="safari-extension://com.ebay.safari.myebaymanager-QYHMMGCMJR/7de6c67b/background/helpers/prefilterHelper.js"></script>

Hi Shy
Funny that you posted this . I just picked up 10 bags of cotton from a lady in town for free and there are some really large pieces in it . How I got them is I posted on Kijjii ad page not sure if you have it down there but what about posting some thing on Craigs list . The lady made my day for sure. Good luck Tom |
There are a number of sources online for scrap bags. Just enter "fabric scrap bags" into the search box on your browser.

First off...Hexes not sexes..I didn't proof read....BARON..it was not any ounces..it was just bags of end and piece that were left over from quilts they made for the shop to show..usually it was put in quart bags about full for 5.00..I got all sort of different material..which was great ..After the lady found out what people were using them for .She quit..I suppose she thought it was losing her money..I don't know what she does with it now..
TOM we don't have what u have..Craig's list won't help me much either..I live in rural Iowa..small small town..MANIAC..I will check. that out..thank u ALL. |
That did catch my attention! But I was so busy wondering how you have managed to use all your scraps that I let it pass.
I have it on good authority that if you leave two scraps alone in a dark closet, you will soon have thousands of them to deal with. At least that's what seems to happen with my scraps! |

LOL!!! I love this forum! You ladies make my day!!

You say you live in rural Iowa. Just a long shot, but are you close to SE Iowa , Burlington area? I have extra fabric that I'd rather have the space it's taking than the fabric. Not really interested in making any $ from it. PM me if interested.

Just for reference, I think 100% quilting weight cotton fabric runs around 4.5 - 6 ounces per yard. I use that when I try to decide if a scrap bag is a deal (shipping is always a factor). My LQS has a scrapfest once or twice a year and charges $16 a pound. No shipping fees helps (buy local when possible!). : )

I, too, am laughing out loud.

I buy various scrap bags via ebay. Have had some really beautiful lots....Most of my vintage fabrics are sourced this way.

KLO..I also got a chuckle out of it on this cold day it is 25 below zero here today..so any chuckle is helpful..

Your LQS might not sell scrap bags but you could ask if they might know of a customer that might have some they would like to sell or trade. Also if your grocery store has a free info board for customers to post notices you could put up a card stating you are looking for scraps.
Also check out the local thrift stores. These items are often donated. I have even purchased some garments as a source for stash fabrics. Good Luck! |
What kind of scraps are you looking for? Are you specific in width and length?
|
Speaking of that typo....
in my shop we used to sell small brown bags of scrap yardage - about 4 yds. We folded the top down, stapled on a label that said CHEAP S.E.X. $5, and placed them in a barrel near the check out desk. In small print we also wrote S.E.X. = Stash Enhancement eXperience. The customers, in general, loved them, often buying them several at a time!:D Jan in VA |
I just borrowed a quilting book by Victoria Findlay Wolfe from the library. It has DWR designs made with scraps and fabrics. She has another book called 15 Minutes of Play which I have not seen yet. Scraps of all kinds and sizes are sewn together into "fabrics" which are then used for quilt projects, sounds like fun!!! I plan to look for the book. Just think, there could be a drastic decrease of scraps :D !

This might be what you are looking for. I have purchased fabrics from them and they are very good to deal with.

Oh darn! I was going to google "sex patterns" I am getting a little bored with the hexies. Thanks for a laugh. My typing is not what it used to be either.

I guess my response is both a suggestion and a question. Couldn't you use clothes? I am new to sewing/quilting and as I cleaned out my closet I took some clothes that are either too small or so out of date that I cut them apart to use as scraps. Put them in groups of cotton, knits and mixed materials. Jeans that are unwearable (hubby goes through jeans like crazy) and so I am just going to cut them up and use them for totes, baskets for storing supplies and maybe piece together for a apron. My son is a restless sleeper and moves a lot and creates a hole in his fitted sheets an so I m going to cut that part out and have the rest to use for quilting. He buy 800 to 1500 thread count so nice material. He buys fitted in full and flat in queen, we take the queen fitted but that leaves the full flat left over.

Thanks. Elaine for the site...

Missouri Star Quilt Co sells bags of scraps also:

I found some on ebay

KeepSake Quilting catalog has a page of scrap bags quite a lot to choose from.
|
I bought a Moda scrap bag a few years ago from a quilt shop that was in a quilt shop hop. I really liked it. I haven't seen them anymore though unless you can buy them online.
|
If you don't have two scraps left to leave in a dark closet, ebay's a good source (as others have suggested). When I started out and was building my stash I purchased several lots of fabric that were mostly fat quarters and smaller and was able to quickly build up plenty to use for scrappy projects. I did end up having to wash most of them, as quite a few smelled either of cigarette smoke or heavy perfume.

I was wondering about the "sexes" part...
