Toothpicks?? I applique on planes also (just returned from a sailing trip in the Bahamas :D ) but I've never used toothpicks for applique....

Toothpicks work great to help turn edges under especially at points.

How do they let you on a plane with scissors?? Or needles?? I very nearly had my keys taken away because "they could be used as a weapon"!!!

How long ago was this? They've been letting people on planes with scissors (4" or smaller) for quite some time. I just went to the Bahamas last month and took a small hand-sewing kit that included needles and scissors.
