I know how you feel. Been there, done that, but they will show up and until then they are in a "safe place".

misseva 06-02-2014 01:12 PM

Alibris.com is a good place to buy used books cheap.

slbram17 06-02-2014 02:30 PM

I have lost books or patterns before and lots of time later, I found them inside a tub of fabric. You never know where they might show up but they probably will someday.

I know what they look like, as I was thinking of buying them again, and I know that I didn't lend them out, as I don't have anyone around here to lend them to. One of them is pink, so it would stand out. I have two book cases, and I checked under the bed, as I read in bed. I bought them years ago... Ughhh

:DYou all do realize there are Quilt Pixies living with us, don't you? They seem to arrive with our very first creative attempt. Sometimes they are very helpful, but this mischievous side of them can be quite vexing. Just ask them (very nicely, of course) for their help -- can't hurt!

I misplace things in my sewing room when I straighten it up.

You have the cutest dog!

barri1 06-02-2014 05:31 PM

I really needed all the laughs from the disappearance of my books.. I still haven't found them. I have been doing applique for a long time, so don't need the books for technique. I have tons of quilting books. I started on a story quilt about a good friend of mine, and wanted different ideas to incorporate onto it.. I get a lot of info from You tube, and the internet. I have a couple of Mary Lou Weidman's books which have taught me to think outside the box, and have fun with what I am doing..
Thanks for the cute dog comment.. Socrates is an awesome guy.. He is so very patient, and lets me quilt without bothering me. He just loves being there for me..

I am organizing my quilting magazines (looking for duplicates) - just ran into a "quilting book" inside a magazine.

My "approach to calm myself on my constant search for lost "gotta haves" is to say out loud three times, it's okay - I give up.

Many times it works.

pokeyscorner 06-03-2014 12:26 AM

I tend to re-buy books because I forget I've already purchased them. Although I did misplace 4 sets of Marti Michell's templates in the sewing room for about 2 yrs. because I put them where they would be easier to find when I needed them!:o:p

I have this VERY SAFE PLACE at my house - where I put very special things.....and it is so safe that items placed there are not seen again.........If I can ever find that safe place, I will have such fun looking at all of the special things I have placed there over the years.......

quilter68 06-03-2014 06:06 AM

Dear St. Anthony, Please come 'round; Something's lost and can't be found!

Works for me.

Hahah...let me know if you find any of MY stuff there too! LOL

nanac 06-03-2014 06:11 AM

Boy, do I feel your pain. Whatever it is that I lost (and it happens all the time), will show up right after I bought another one. When I do find it, it is in a place that I already looked for it. By now, I have doubles of a lot of my books. When I die, there are going to be some happy quilters :)

Caswews 06-03-2014 06:27 AM

Ahh so the sewing gremlins have found you as well eh ? LOL Never fails, I have something, come back to look for it and its gone. Many times its my DH trying to be kind and organize things for me .. Pffftt stop it !LOL
Then I buy another and find it --story of my life !LOL

tessagin 06-03-2014 06:32 AM

Did you by any chance put them with your magazine table in the tv room. Have you checked in the kitchen and maybe put them with your cookbooks. My dear grandmother used to do that since she cooked and sewed in the kitchen. I have a file drawer for manuals for appliances. DH was looking for a manual and found one of my applique books in the drawer file. Is it with your remote? LOL!!

Several years ago I "lost" my camera. We had been on a trip, so maybe I left it in the motel or at my son's home? One day about six months after I first noticed it missing, I prayed to St. Anthony. Several hours later while walking by an old trunk that still had Christmas stuff laying on top of it, I moved some place mats and....there in the basket I had put received Christmas cards in and had moved from the upstairs to downstairs before putting it away was my camera. So, I think the prayer works or maybe St. Anthony is telling me if I was a better housekeeper, I wouldn't lose things?

Usually when I lose a book, which I do all the time, I have found that it's never the color I thought it was when I find it. Good luck Barri!

caspharm 06-03-2014 01:52 PM

I, too, have placed things for me to find when I need them or make it easier to find until I need them. Then it's the black hole until I don't need. Thankfully, I usually haven't bought a replacement.

The times it really bugs me is when I buy a book, magazine, or tool that I really like, either online or at a store. and guess what I already had it! :) Luckily, I haven't done it for a while.

ILoveToQuilt 06-03-2014 04:30 PM

Did you check behind your nightstands and bureaus? I tend to have so many books on mine, that some just slip off the back and get lost between the nightstand and the wall.

BTW. I had good friends that grew up in Woodmere in the 1960's.

Hope you find the books! Perhaps they are in the same place as the socks that get lost in the dryer??? LOL

SusieQ54 06-03-2014 07:28 PM

I know just how you feel! Usually I can't find lost things when I look for them directly. Seems when I wait a while and am looking for something else, it will turn up. This has been happening more and more the older I get, lol. My Dad used to say, "It will be in the last place you look."

This has happened to me.

Hope they show up soon for you.

Have misplaced some interfacing that seems to be hiding out on ke. The plus side - I have rediscovered some itrms I had fofgotten about.

Oh me too, I would argue to my last breathe that a book had an orange cover & someone must have taken it because no orange books in book case, only to finally find it with a green cover! LOL the gremlins must have come in & changed it-LOL

JustAbitCrazy 06-04-2014 02:41 AM

Did you find your books yet? Usually I have to clean house to find what I am missing. Then I find many things I "lost" and gave up on finding.

litacats 06-04-2014 02:57 AM

My DH couldn't find something and he spent days looking for it, I moved his back brace and lo and behold there it was, so maybe you have put something on top of them,

barri1 06-04-2014 07:06 AM

The books are still elusive. I went online to see if our library system owns them, and they don't. I'm tryng to hold off buying them again, so I ordered a different book on Amazon.. I'm convinced that I left them at my brother's house a while ago, but my sister in law hasn't seen them.. I will be organizing my fabric today, as I hit a tag sale on Sun, and everything is sitting on the table.. I will try to clean a little with an incentive of finding the books..

Sewnoma 06-04-2014 07:30 AM

Try putting copies of the books into your Amazon shopping card, but don't check out yet. Maybe you can "threaten" them into being found! LOL

This is hilarious!!! Thanks for the laugh.

hudgoddess 06-04-2014 07:39 AM

And you know as soon as you buy them again you'll find the old copies!!!

LOL! I spent several hours last fall tearing my house apart to find a moss green t-shirt that was part of my uniform for a training weekend. Turned out it was kelly green and turned inside out. Thankfully I found that before having to re-purchase.

Cheers, K

Look in containers with fabric from projets you may have been working on from them ;I have some times but the book with the fabic and then " Lost" the book. Goodluck

charsuewilson 06-04-2014 04:55 PM

I've done this numerous times. I also rarely lend out books. But i have many more than 2 bookcases. Two different books, I've ended up buying twice. One of the two copies I've been taking with me traveling, so it didn't really hurt to have a second copy. When I lose something, I'm likely to find it when I least expect it, in a fairly unlikely place. Lately, it doesn't help that everything in our house got packed up to install new flooring. I'm still finding stuff I though was lost forever.

IBQUILTIN 06-05-2014 10:01 PM

You make me feel so much better about losing things that are right in front of me. Sometimes I just walk away and come back a little later and voila there it is right where I looked before.

Joyce 06-06-2014 01:33 PM

The only time (twice) wa because a new cover had been put on an older book. My daughter gained 2 new books for her collection, so it worked out:o
Joyce Raab

barri1 06-06-2014 04:48 PM

I guess I mislead by mentioning two book cases.. They are each a wall 16 feet by 8 foot high. They are built in. I went though both. I'm inclined to think I brought them with me to my brother's, and forgot to take them home.
