Well it finally happened to me. The old rotary cutter got me. I must have had me left hand to close to the rotary cutter. I was holding the ruler in place, and oops there it went. Gone is the side of the index finger tip. My DH doctored me. But, boy does it sting. Don't do this at home!!!!

carhop 03-19-2011 01:18 PM

I am withyou on that I broke 2 nails past the quick from useing my suckson grip on ruler then I sliced my finger in the middle I could not figure out where the blood on ruler was coming from

isnthatodd 03-19-2011 01:19 PM

OUCH! Sorry to hear about that. Hope it doesn't interfere with your quilting for too long.

Mazda 03-19-2011 01:21 PM

Ouch!

Marye 03-19-2011 01:22 PM

Where were your gloves????

BellaBoo 03-19-2011 01:23 PM

I am super careful when rotary cutting and I sliced the top of my foot open. The cutter fell from my cutting table and landed blade down on top of my foot. I had on sandals. Now I always wear slip on shoes that cover my feet in my sewing room. So far I haven't cut my finger. I used to use the Klutz glove every time I cut but got out of the habit. I need to find it and start using it again. One ER visit will buy the top of the line die cut machine and dies!

happyscrappy 03-19-2011 01:24 PM

ouch. after i got my new ginghers i cut my hand clear to the bone. it was a very clean cut, i was quite impressed. lessons learned the hard way!

milp04 03-19-2011 01:24 PM

Oh No! OUCH! So sorry to hear of your mishap, been there done that. Be sure to keep triple antibiotic ointment on it, and keep putting it on throughout the day. It will help it to heal quickly and without scarring.

I use one of the small suction holders now. I've learned to not cut when I'm tired now.

Good luck and may you have a speedy finger recovery.

Jim's Gem 03-19-2011 01:38 PM

Ouch!!!! Make sure you some Anti-bacterial ointment on it for a few days. You don't want it to get infected!!!!

CarrieAnne 03-19-2011 01:41 PM

Oh, ouch! Hope it feels better soon!

pocoellie 03-19-2011 01:45 PM

Been there, hope your finger gets better soon.

Maia B 03-19-2011 01:48 PM

Ouch! So sorry! Yes, be careful to keep it clean, use Neosporin for a few days, go to the doc at the first sign if infection or slow healing, and decrease sugar intake for a few days. If you smoke, at *least* cut back. Sorry, can't help it (nurse. Also be sure your tetanus is up to date. If not, those immediate care centers can usually give you that. Just don't want anything worse to happen to you. Hugs.

Summer Spice 03-19-2011 02:02 PM

Sorry-sorry-sorry, that just gives me the shivers. Hope you heal quickly.

janny40 03-19-2011 02:05 PM

I my goodness, OUCH!!!!! I stuck my self trying to thread my new long arm sewing machine the other day trying to get a hold of the thread, thank goodness it wasn't sewing.

feffertim 03-19-2011 02:06 PM

I also cut the top of my foot when I dropped my cutter and sliced the h*** out of my foot. Could not stop it from bleeding, and still have a scar 6 months later. Those cutters cut deep.

Tussymussy 03-19-2011 02:13 PM

Hope you heal soon. We all do a daft thing sooner or later. I am crossing my fingers that mine is later, but I must be close to the head of the queue!

ChubbyBunny 03-19-2011 02:28 PM

I feel your pain.....literally. I sliced off part of my finger with my rotary cutter about 3 days ago. It was my first accident in over 6 years of quilting. Had to happen sooner or later.

scrappy happy 03-19-2011 02:35 PM

oh been there to, i had to go to the doc, cause i took off the side of my finger. doc put this stuff on it called foam jell oh was that nice, no more pain, and it stop the bleeding instantly. and no stiches ,corse they was nothing to stitch.

DesiG 03-19-2011 02:39 PM

Ugh! I cut myself a while back with a brand spanking new blade in my rotary cutter. Weird thing was, it did not hurt when I did it (blood all over, and me looking like a cartoon character- duh....what?) but boy did it hurt afterwards. Somehow I managed to run the cutter up the middle of my left index finger. Still don't know how I managed that. Some steri- strips and a finger immobilizer later, I was told to stay away from quilting until it healed. It took a while.

SEW 03-19-2011 04:39 PM

oooooh! Who knew quilting could be so dangerous! Thanks for reminding us to be vigilant when we are working with the "tools of the trade"

IrelandDragonQuilting 03-19-2011 04:42 PM

Owie! I am sorry to hear that happened, but I do want to thank you for reminding us that we need to be careful. I know at times I can get carried away and not pay attention to everything as I should. I hope you heal quickly!

Airwick156 03-19-2011 04:50 PM

Okay...I decided after reading all of these posts....I am not going to use my fingers, instead I will use my husbands that way if the cutter slips, it won't be my fingers that get cut. LOL. When I watch the Fons and Porter show on the TV, I notice they use some type of glove when they cut.

joyceinoh 03-19-2011 04:53 PM

Every time I use mine I think about how quick it could slice into a finger. That is why I won't let grand kids near my sewing stuff. When i get tired of sewing I don't always put everything away and I would not want them to get at those cutters or even scissors.

Hope your finger heals ((((HUGS)))

mtnative 03-19-2011 04:55 PM

That makes my finger hurt. So sorry ~ hope you heal well and soon. I appreciate the heads up to remind me to be careful.

darlin121 03-19-2011 04:57 PM

Bless your heart, I KNOW that hurts, been there - done that!

nativetexan 03-19-2011 05:13 PM

foot mishaps is one reason i use a cutter that closes when i let go of the handle.
also been there, cut my thumb and nail. bled for 5 hours. no stitches though. just time to heal.
you will be much more careful from now on, let me tell you.

Carron 03-19-2011 07:11 PM

Oh you poor thing. Heal quickly!

Bettia 03-19-2011 07:28 PM

Last fall I cut my left index finger off with my rotary cutter. I cut it from the first knuckle into my fingernail clear down to the tip of my finger. Once I got the bleeding stopped, I super glued the piece back on and put a bandaid on it. It didn't adhere, but it sort of protected my finger until it healed.
Believe it or not it grew back. I still hurt like the dickens.

pamkasperi 03-19-2011 07:31 PM

I did this back in December - cut it right off before I could stop myself...took a while to heal...neosoporine(sp?) helped it alot.

Now when I cut - my fingers are far from the edge and tucked under....haven't gotten the gloves yet!

The Quiet Quilter 03-19-2011 07:50 PM

Sorry to hear about that. Hope it
heals quickly. Prayers for a quick
healing. Hugs, Sharon

hperttula123 03-19-2011 07:57 PM

My Bff cut off the side tip of her left forefinger about a month ago. No stitiches but she has worn an ugly bandage for quite a while.

A couple of years ago, I misplaced my rotary cutter and went out to quickly replace it....turned out to be one of the spring-loaded safety kind where the blade is covered when you don't have a lot of pressure on it. It took some getting used to...but since I am invariably barefoot when sewing-----reading your story makes me sooo glad I have it!!!!

MerryQuilter 03-20-2011 03:44 AM

Soo sorry feel better soon.

uniquelynancy 03-20-2011 04:00 AM

Oh nO! Ouch!! Hope it heals quickly!

Marion Jean 03-20-2011 04:06 AM

I sliced open my thumb badly on a mandolin (slicing vegetables) and swore I'd never use such a dangerous tool again LOL of course, rotary cutters don't fit in that category, right? Seriously, this is something we should all pay more attention to - these are extremely sharp blades we're using, and I know I don't always concentrate as much as I should when I'm cutting. Your message is a wake-up reminder. Hope you heal quickly, and glad it wasn't worse.

sand344 03-20-2011 04:52 AM

Double ouch!!!!! :|

quilter68 03-20-2011 05:08 AM

To 3plus2granny and all of those who have gone before in the OPPS! section.

I sympathize and empathize and if you take aspirin; it bleeds for a long time.

The ER Dr. and Nurse and I were laughing so much he forgot to count the stitches. He said 4 stitches but my regular Dr. took out seven stitches.

After reading all these stories, I think I will get a glove.

Deborah12687 03-20-2011 05:19 AM

I haven't cut my finger with the rotory cutter but I have cut the tips of my finger nails. The worst thing I ever did years ago was I slammed my pinky finger in my dish washer door and it almost cut the finger off completely. The bone joint was crushed and I can't bend the middle joint very well.

ladydi64 03-20-2011 05:20 AM

Need to be careful with those cutters ladies. So sorry for your mishap, been there, done that. Take care and hope you heal fast.
