Went to Whittle's today with DW. Spent $24.65 (thank you honey for your gift) on three fabrics I, in my newness think will complement each other. Looking through the fabrics, I was drawn to those that reminded me of Mama and Daddy when I was young, back in the early 1960's. Green for border and sashes. The fine flower pattern has just a touch of green which I think will be brought out by the sash, and the larger flowers have a little green and a buff background I think will go nicely. The purple flowers are there because.....because..... heck. Just 'cause I like em. And It's my quilt.
$3.50 per yd x 2.5
$2.30 per yd X 2.5
$3.50 per yd X 2.5

6% Kentucky sales extortion (tax)

Still need to decide on binding and backing. Will be using heirloom batting (in stock in the stash)
WooHoo!! I'm ready to roll tomorrow. Don

Sounds wonderful!!! We would love to see a photo when you've finished it...

QuiltingHaven 11-12-2012 06:50 PM

Make sure you share a picture of your quilt when you finish it. Better yet, share pictures as you begin it. Sounds like fun.

Lori S 11-12-2012 06:50 PM

Nothing like a fired up quilter!!! can't wait to see photos.

Toni C 11-12-2012 06:59 PM

Yee Haw sounds great to me! Can hardly wait to see it!

barny 11-12-2012 07:13 PM

Pretty fabric. I love 9 patch quilts. Have fun. Get going.

LoisM 11-12-2012 07:19 PM

I can't wait to see it completed. May I suggest a purple binding?

Tallbald 11-12-2012 08:26 PM

may I accept your suggestion of purple binding with gratitude? That's a wonderful suggestion. Don

MimiBug123 11-12-2012 08:28 PM

Love your fabric choices! Can't wait to the the finished quilt.

erstan947 11-12-2012 08:37 PM

I love to see someone excited but their fabric and quilts. You are off to a great start!

busy fingers 11-12-2012 10:30 PM

Looking forward to seeing the end result.

earthwalker 11-12-2012 10:53 PM

Great fabrics....I think a nice vibrant purple (one that compliments the deepest purple in your fruit and flower fabric ) would be a brilliant binding and maybe a dash here and there depending how you feel. Look forward to seeing how you progress....happy quilting.

GrannieAnnie 11-12-2012 11:02 PM

How did you manage to go to a store like that and come out under $25? And just 3 pieces of fabric? Do love the prints.

jemma 11-12-2012 11:20 PM

yes a purple binding would look great---get set go--pics please

Tallbald 11-13-2012 05:29 AM

How did I get out spending only $25? Well, the less I buy at one time, the less it hurts to see the cost. You eat an elephant one bite at a time I'm told. Plus, the less I buy at once, the more justification there is for returning to the scene of the spending crime! I love the clearance rack, as does my dear Miss Penny, and the clearance rack waxes and wanes so next time there's likely to be more nifty-cool-neato-sharp-oooh-that's-beautiful stuff to get at a deep discount.Another plus is it gives Miss Penny and me a reason to head out together on a mission. We share going to the gun shop to look around, going to the thrift stores to gawk, and now we can share more time together going to Whittles. It's a win-win situation. Civil War prints I found out are kinda high, at $6.50 or so a yard. A beginner like me? I don't need to be hacking and chopping my way through pricey material like that just yet. An experienced quilter who damages or inadvertently wastes premium material can always find a reason it happened that makes sense. Me? It would just be inexperience. I mean, we don't give our new 16 year old driver a Corvette----we give them a 13 year old 4 cylinder rag with duct taped upholstery and mismatched hubcaps to learn to drive. That's my $2.30 a yard fabric and me. Varooom Varooom. Don

Dina 11-13-2012 05:33 AM

I like your fabric and I like your enthusiasm! I am a big fan of purple too. :)

Dina

ArtsyOne 11-13-2012 05:45 AM

You certainly got a great deal on your fabrics! Definitely purple should be in there somewhere - either as a stop border or as the binding.

joyce888 11-13-2012 06:05 AM

Hi Tallbald. I think your fabric choices are great. Must admit I didn't know what DW stood for (do now) so I read your profile and blog. I too resist change and hated when the format of this QB changed but like anything new there is a learning curve (I'm still in mine). I agree there is just to much to loose in good people, information, and ideas to let a few ads rule my day. Hope to see pics of your completed project. Also curious will you be quilting it on a vintage machine and sending it out?

mic-pa 11-13-2012 06:24 AM

YOur fabric choices are perfect. Enjoy

Jingle 11-13-2012 06:32 AM

Great fabric choices. I still get fired up at making quilts and I have made 112 and already started the next one. I finish one and start another, been doing this for several years now.
I can't wait to see it finished up.

Tallbald 11-13-2012 12:16 PM

I'll be sewing the top on a handcrank 201 or 99. I hope to be doing the quilting on my Janome 532 (New Home vintage 1964 machine Miss Penny got me for my BD 2 yrs ago). DW is "Dear Wife". Won't be able to reach my goal though without her............Don

In our neck of the woods. sales tax is 9.25%, and wish material was that cheap. My favorite colors are the sage green and purple. I am also making a 9 patch (new at this) for my gdaughter who is deployed. Can't wait to see your quilt.

jeanneb52 11-14-2012 04:25 AM

You go girl...nice selection

DebbieG 11-14-2012 05:13 AM

Glenda m 11-14-2012 05:33 AM

and everything else. In checking my WM receipts, I see 3 different taxes, and no way to tell which items get which taxes. sheesh.

kathbug 11-14-2012 06:29 AM

Can't wait to see the finished master piece. Make sure you share the pic with us.

Friday1961 11-14-2012 06:32 AM

I like your fabrics! They should make up beautifully. Can't wait to see!

Grace MooreLinker 11-14-2012 07:27 AM

I think the fabrics are very pretty and sure a quilt will be beautiful, the purple I like most.

I wished I had your "stick to it"...ness. I've got a couple favorite Christmas fabrics I got at JoAnn's in the past. I WANT more. I'm afraid to look. I'll buy 5 yards each--------and have no idea what I intend to do with it.

Thankfully no tax on food from grocery stores in CA though.

nstitches4u 11-14-2012 10:59 AM

Great fabric choices. I look forward to seeing a picture of your finished quilt. Go, Don!

carolynjo 11-14-2012 12:10 PM

So exciting to see your choices. One of my most successful students was a man who had no previous experience with color. His quilts were spectacular.

Janet L52 11-14-2012 02:15 PM

What fun! I love your enthusiasm and you made wonderful fabric choices. Please keep us posted on your progress!

mimi=17 11-14-2012 03:51 PM

I think you are on the right track, only buy per project. I was told to build a stach.....I have had sooooo much joy,but I will never ever see it made into quilts....I must hurry lol. Good luck to you from Alabama.

Early on, Indiana taxed food, but that soon changed. Carry outs are taxed. I bought a 20 piece chicken dinner with all the trimmings---------and it was taxed. I'm not surprised too much about the chicken, but the salads, too?

cowgirlquilter 11-14-2012 06:38 PM

Nice choice of fabric.....can't wait to see how it turns out!

Bataplai 11-14-2012 06:40 PM

Agree on the purple binding. Looking forward to seeing your photos. Enjoy!
