makes it all worth it.

When I first started quiliting a few years ago the second quilt was a lap quilt that I made was for my youngest son who was in his 20's. He left for an 8 week military training and drove 15 hours to the base. Once he got there he took a picture of the quilt I made on his bed there and sent me a text from his phone and the picture. And said thanks mom this kept me warm and thinking of home during my stops along the way. He sleeps with the quilt each night at the base. He said it reminds him of home but has one wish...wish it was longer and asked if I could make him another so he can have it reach from head to toe. That was enough to bring a tear to my eyes.

Quiltngolfer 08-26-2012 06:51 AM

What a great feeling that your quilt gave him a part of home away from home. I would also like to thank him for his service. It is such a sacrifice to leave home and all that we love for service to one's country. I wish every military person could have a quilt from home.

luvstoquilt 08-26-2012 07:37 AM

Wonderful story and thank him for me as well for his service. I would feel so blessed that my son felt my quilt gave him a piece of home and love. Beautiful!!!

susiequilt 08-26-2012 08:47 AM

Get off the computer and go make that sweet boy a BIG quilt!
:D

Mickey1 08-26-2012 06:24 PM

I bet you make that new quilt in record time! God bless your son.

spokanequilter 08-26-2012 06:31 PM

I have a son who is a soldier also - please thank your son for his service to our country!! I love this story. It's always good to know our quilts are used and loved. When my daughter first moved away from home, pretty far away, I made her a small lap quilt for her birthday. She was out to a birthday dinner with her fiance and his family when she opened my package. She call me crying and saying how much she needed something from home because she was very homesick. My now son-in-law's mother e-mailed me later that night and told me how my daughter had sat in the restaurant during the rest of the dinner with my quilt wrapped around her shoulders.

deedum 08-26-2012 06:37 PM

Talk about love in a quilt! Please send our thanks and graditude for his service.

Heart warming story, brought a tear to my eyes. Tell Him thanks for His service and pray that God watches over Him. He sounds like such a loving Son, better get started on that special quilt, lol....great family :)

I have made my DGSs quilts (or fleece blankets) for when they go off to college. I got the most wonderful hugs from them. The older one told me that when he went off to Virginia Tech a couple years ago, his roommate asked where he got the cool blanket. He told him his Grannie made it for him. He even takes it on camping trips. It makes life worthwhile to know our "boys" appreciate our quilts. They tell me that it is like one big hug from me every time they use them. Now what can be better than that?!

ditto. And thank him for us!

rj.neihart 08-27-2012 04:22 AM

What a wonderful story. This brought a tear to my eye. My son is also in the military and recently came home from deployment in Qatar - one year! Hopefully this will be his only tour - but while he was gone, I made him a quilt, all by hand. I am holding onto it for Christmas - but if he's sent back, I'll give it to him early - hopefully he can take it with him! (not that he will need it over there, as it's extremely hot - but will remind him of home).

quiltmom04 08-27-2012 04:30 AM

Wow! I'm impressed that the military would let him use it! That's wonderful that he has it and that it is so comforting to him!

Latrinka 08-27-2012 04:41 AM

Awe, so sweet! God Bless him!

nygal 08-27-2012 05:15 AM

What a nice heart felt story. You sound like a loving Mom and your son sounds like a very loving son. God bless him for his service. My dh is retired Air Force.

jamsbuying 08-27-2012 07:08 AM

I bet you started a new quilt!!! Love the story and I thank your son for serving his country!

jgriinke 08-27-2012 07:38 AM

That is wonderful! I didn't think they would let them take something like that with. Glad to hear they do. My oldest grandson left in July for basic training. We are planning on going to see him graduate.
Thank your son for me for serving!
God Bless Him and the rest of the troops!

Grace MooreLinker 08-27-2012 07:42 AM

Thank him for his service for our freedom, God bless you as his Mom.the quilt
I'm sure was a blessing to him.

NanaCsews2 08-27-2012 07:56 AM

Oh, I would have been bawling my eyes out. What a great mature quality you raised your son with. I would make him another longer wider one. This would cover him up. The original would more than likely be wrapped up in a tight hug next to his chest or wrapped around his pillow to lay his head on. Our soldiers need all the 'home support' they can get. Please thank him for his courage and dedication.

petlover 08-27-2012 07:57 AM

I am sitting here with tears streaming down my face. What a lovely story. Like everyone else, please thank him for his service and protection for our wonderful country. May god keep him safe from harm and back to his families loving arms. You raised a wonderful son.

matraina 08-27-2012 08:00 AM

How heartwarming! Thank him for his service to his country. Please let us see a picture of the finished quilt when you make it.

MimiBug123 08-27-2012 08:28 AM

As a military mom of 2, I can relate to your story! It made me cry. My question is, how long did it take you to start sewing on his second quilt? I'm guessing about 5 minutes!

I just sent my granddaughter a simple blue and white pinwheel quilt. Nothing fancy, and tied. She is happy as a clam in deep water. So like you, it is great for me when they use them and don't stick them in a closet. smile

karate lady 08-27-2012 08:41 AM

my love and thanks to your precious son.

jcrow 08-27-2012 08:44 AM

That is so nice. I just hope the other people in the platoon have quilts on their beds, too. I bet they want one, if they don't have one. This is where I should probably make one for one of the service personnel.

QandE2010 08-27-2012 01:46 PM

We do need a love or like button on this forum. Thank him for his service and he will really like it when his feet don't stick out. LOL.
I make fleece throws for members of my family and relatives. I make them 60" wide and always longer than they are tall. I have a 6'4" brother and I made his 2 1/2" long to accomodate his long body. He tells me everytime he sees me that he loves it. They are good for tv watching or to go to football games.

Bless all our military men and women. Thank him for his service.

twilight 08-27-2012 03:59 PM

I would also like to Thank him for his service to our country. Hope you get the longer quilt to him quickly. God Bless the USA and all that serves her.

nstitches4u 08-27-2012 04:27 PM

As a mother, I felt my eyes well up with tears when I read your story. It must make you feel good knowing your son loves you so much and appreciates the quilt you so lovingly made for him.

Please thank your son for his service to our country.

caspharm 08-27-2012 06:47 PM

I know the feeling. I made my son a quilt after he graduated Navy boot camp and it traveled with him. He is now back home with his quilt, after 5 years in the Navy, but how he is trying to get into the Coast Guard. I guess I'll have to see if I can find Coast Guard fabric. :)

JaniceP 08-28-2012 02:45 AM

Thank you for this story and please, thank your son for his service. Wish all our men and women who serve this country had a quilt of their own to take with them also.

alwayslearning 08-28-2012 04:17 AM

Someone raised a great son!

Pieces2 08-28-2012 04:37 AM
