Makes me smile

when I think of my Mom and Dad sitting at a quilting frame in the wintertime hand quilting. They would hang the frame from the ceiling and when they were done quilting they would pull it up to the ceiling so we could walk in the living room. Daddy was pretty good with a needle. He enjoyed doing things with Mother so if she quilted he thought he should too. I really miss the two of them.

I can understand that feeling but I must ask. If the quilt was hanging from the ceiling, this would mean it wasn't pulled tight on a frame. Is that what I am imagining, because that would be great for my kingsize but how did they get the top part done, my imagination is being stumped. - Joan

The frame was an old wooden one that was typically put on some sort of supports on the floor. Daddy just put ropes or something on the four corners and hung them from hooks in the ceiling. I don't remember how he was able to pull them up to the ceiling when they were finished for the day. This was a long time ago and I can remember as well as I used to.

My mother-in-law had one like this. She would stretch the backing tight and tack to the frame, but just lay her batting and backing out smooth and pin it. As she quilted, she would roll the quilted part out of the way so she could get to the rest of it. I was used to seeing my mom's, which was something like 2 saw horses with poles between them and the backing, batting and top all stretched and rolled on the polls, so mil's seemed very awkward and strange to me. She did some beautiful quilting on it, though.

My MIL had one of those frames hanging from her ceiling when I first met her. Her late DH had drilled holes in all 4 pieces of the frame and she would roll it up as she quilted and she would drop some sort of pins in the holes to make it stay taut.
