I have a friend whose favorite pincushion is a sock. My personal favorite is a bunny made as an Easter Decoration that is stuffed. The body holds pins and I put the needles in the head. Make sure to put the needles in and out like taking a stitch so they don't get lost in the pincushion. Sometimes I just use pins out of a little storage box or tin.

I also use beach sand that I've collected. Or, you can buy silica sand at any hardware store. I make an inner lining out of muslin and fill it with sand. Hopefully, a picture of 2 woolies I've made last month for an exchange will come through....hoping as I've never posted a picture before...if it works, I'll post other stuff I've made later.

I love all that is on here. I use sheep wool, it keeps your pins and needles sharp.

What is your favorite material for filling them? I've seen suggestions of nut shells and poly-fil. Anything else work?

Do you do anything to the bottoms to weight them down or prevent pins and needles from going all the way through?

Would it work to somehow put a magnet in a pincushion to use for picking up pins? (I say this as I look at a magnetized paperclip holder and wondering if it could somehow be incorporated into a pincushion.)

What is your favorite type or pattern to make?

Could you post some pictures here to share what you've made?

Do you have any hints or warnings or things you have tried and just didn't work?

Thanks for any response you post.
.

I like to use rice or lentils for weight and fill rest with fibre fill.

Just be careful if you use sand from a building supply place. A friend gave me an adorable pin cusion. and it rusted all my glass top pins.

Hi Nancy, Wanted to say that I make pin cushions out of crafter's felt and use a pattern I made up myself. It is a mouse and I use leftover quilt batting to stuff, as well as stuffing dolls, pillows and toys. I tear it apart to make it softer and more maleable and it works well.
