I am a longarm quilter and use WASHABLE CRAYOLA MARKERS to mark my quilting designs. The only color I do not use is the black. I have had a problem getting the black to wash out in 1 washing. DO NOT IRON OVER THE WASHABLE MARKER. This can cause some "trace" to be left behind. i.e. You wash and the marker comes out but over time you see a shadow of the marker. I've been using the Crayola brand marker for years and the iron is the only problem I have encountered. I just buy the small 8 pack of colors which last for a very long time and they are not very expensive.

What a timely topic! Just jumped on this afternoon to research marking tools since I'm going to try doing other that SITD for only the second time. It never occurred to me to look "outside the sewing box" ;-)

This is brilliant. I learn the best stuff on this board. I'm going to put some of these in my Christmas stocking! :)

I use the washable markers and/or frixion pens. I always starch my fabric before cutting and every time I press as I go along. By the time I mark my quilt top, there is so much starch that I am actually drawing on starch and not fabric. LOL! Never had a problem removing marks.

I use them all the time to mark the numbers on my blocks and rows. I never and test they always wash out.

To use frixion pens or not to use frixion pens.

This is nice to know. Thanks for sharing!

What a fabulous idea, thanks for the FYI. I would probably test the markers on a sample fabric before I use them, but from what you've told us, it's a simple solution to an age old problem - how to mark quilts.

The crayola washable markers are what I use all them time too. Have never had a problem with them washing out. Love them!

But, it is a good idea to testy everytime....just in case!
