If I am doing FMQ, when it is a pattern and not just straight lines I have used the Golden Threads Quilting Paper. It comes in rolls and works really well. I can print out a pattern on my computer and then trace it to the GT paper.

Love it.

I use the little Chaco Liner by Clover. Its chalk powder in a little stubby pen that has a wheel that you run across the fabric. Works well, I'm doing a black quilt at the moment. Just brush your hand over it to remove.

I love the clover white pen! You just need to get the ink flowing and then it has to dry before you can see the lines. I like it because it doesn't wear off while quilting and it always comes out in the wash for me. I'm sorry yours didn't work. Maybe try a new one.
