Does anyone know the ingredients in this product? I have looked on their website and on the bottle and haven't been able to find an ingredient list.

MissSandra 05-16-2011 08:32 AM

no idea and none that i found searching the internet eitiher. its a huge secret evidently.

Jill 05-16-2011 08:37 AM

I think it was posted on here within the last month or so and I checked but didn't save it. Perhaps someone who saved the message will post it here for you.

scrapykate 05-16-2011 08:39 AM

don't know but love the product.

QuiltE 05-16-2011 08:50 AM

Probably a secret proprietary formula! :)

ewecansew 05-16-2011 09:20 AM

I have been using the vodka/water recipe, but thjin k it is strange that they don't list ingredients. They don't have to list amounts, only content.

Why don't you phone them and ask?
And then post your findings for us to all know!

There's lots of products out there that you'll never find out the ingredients. Just the way it i! :)

TootieAnn 05-16-2011 09:57 AM

I don't know but I love the product.

BMP 05-16-2011 11:34 AM

Only for food items. Lots of things in our homes have no ingredients list.

Holice 05-16-2011 12:16 PM

I imagine only a chemist would be able to tell what is in it.
Could it be Coka Cola and the recipe is secret or is it really a common product repackaged?

Lori S 05-16-2011 12:42 PM

You can get the info if you ask for the MSDS sheet. MSDS stands for Material Saftey Data SHeet. All products must have one in case it is accidentally ingested or other type of issue like it got in your eyes.
If you request one they must give it to you.

QuiltE 05-16-2011 01:08 PM

I just called the 1-800# and never expected to get thru, thinking that it would just be for USA use.

I was told that it's a synthetic spray starch and number one used by quilters!

It was easy for me to talk to him as I told him the stuff is like gold here (price is ^^^) so he had to convince me why it's so great.

The MSDS is on it's way to me.
Not that it will make much of a difference!

QuiltE 05-16-2011 01:10 PM

Curious ... what price are you paying State side? and for what size?

snipforfun 05-16-2011 04:24 PM

Joann.com carries gallons of BestPress. You can use a coupon!

Not when I"m in Canada!!! ... just curious what your prices are.

peaceandjoy 05-16-2011 05:52 PM

When I need it, I do a search for "Mary Ellen's Best Press Sale" and see where I can get it cheapest. I've gotten in from createforless.com and quiltering-warehouse.com. Not sure about shipping w/ either of those for Canada. Good luck!

I love Best Press but even on sale is too much $$ for me.
Starch Homemade ~ lots of other good info on these sites too.

http://crazymomquilts.blogspot.com/search?q=starch
Scroll down - Listed under ‘other tutorials’

Ricky Tims has a recipe but it’s cooked

Diane Gaudynski (http://www.dianegaudynski.net/tips-april.htm) Uses this on her quilts. Scroll to bottom of list

The one I like ~
Best Press Substitute ~ Mix together:
1 tsp lavender essential oil (found in Walmart/Michaels- candle making supplies or drug stores) Note: optional if allergic to scents.
3 oz. vodka
Then add to 24oz distilled water in large spray bottle and shake well.
Hint: Vodka is made from potatoes, a natural starch.

I've been trying for years to get the ingredients because of my dd's allergies. It's not something that would make her itch or sneeze but she has life threatening food allergies and we've found the most unexpected sources of her allergens. I have emailed and got no reply. I've tried to call a bunch of times and can never get through to a person. I give up. They obviously don't know that some people need to avoid some ingredients (or at least know what's in there) or they just don't care.

ewecansew 05-16-2011 10:00 PM

Thanks to you all. I have been travelling today, so haven't been on the computer. Very interesting information. I think I will continue to use my vodka/ water solution. At least if I get really frustrated, I know I am safe drinking it. LOL

wanda lou 05-16-2011 10:05 PM

I will try the Vodka and water solution. Thanks

bamamama 05-16-2011 10:07 PM

Wonder if it is just the cornstarch/water recipe.

Cornstarch is loved by bugs, that is why you are advised if you live in a buggy area not to use starch. It will eat into your fabric to get the starch and cause damage to your fabric. That is why I like Mary Ellens, it doesn't have anything in it to attract bugs.

WOW!

stchenfool 05-17-2011 04:02 AM

Yes, it's 1/4 c. vodka
2 c. distilled water
essential oil of your choice (few drops)

enjoy

Dkm 05-17-2011 04:12 AM

Here's the recipe that I was given.

24 oz distilled water
3 oz vodka
1 teaspoon scented oil(optional)

Use cheap vodka and shake before using.

I haven't made any yet, but friends have.

Note: Remember to use the vodka for the starch.......LOL

bearlea 05-17-2011 04:24 AM

I believe she gave it on her show..... I think it was cornstarch and water but can't remember ... I buy by the gallon. Love it...blessings

LindaR 05-17-2011 04:28 AM

I never heard of this stuff.what do you use it on,just quilts, paper piecing, bindings, or just regular ironing clothes? Also please, has anyone ever used those magic bobbins? Seen a segment on those too, can't find them anywhere but on line. I live near-by a Jo Ann's store.

OmaForFour 05-17-2011 05:30 AM

That's what I was thinking. Something that costs 2 cents to make is sold for about $8!

Jo Mama 05-17-2011 06:03 AM

Me either and I have to cover my nose when I spray because it makes me wheezy. The bottle says environmently friendly but that doesn't mean it's not an allergy trigger.
