Math Whoopsie
So I just made a baby quilt for a friend but do to fuzzy math. I made it 36x63. (4 blocks per row for 7 rows) so it it narrow and long. This whole time I thought I was making it 45x63. That's what happens when a woman with a degree in writing does math I guess. If you were me would you:
a.) Remove a couple of rows to make it shorter. b.) Remove the rows and add them to the width to make the quilt square. (45x45) c.) Leave it the way it is. I don't have the option of adding another row to make it wider while leaving the length. |
I would do B if you could. If not, then don't worry. Babies grow quickly into toddlers who love to drag their quilt thru the house.
You could also add a border that is wider on the sides than the length. Or if it is a modern design, you could add a panel or other blocks or.... to one side.
Maybe post a pic so that we see what you're working with. |
My choice is "B". I would rather have a more square quilt than narrow and long.
I would also make it square, option B. I have made several this size and they looked great. Otherwise your current long and skinny quilt may look a bit odd.
I also vote for the square option.
I have a degree in math & can't write. I've got the their, there & they're down, but that affect/effect has me stumped. |
I'm with B too
Yep I also vote for B. I know its crappy having to open and redo but I think you will be happier with it in the long run.
But there is an option D: if you have the fabric, make 2 more blocks. Then you could take off one row and add a full row of 6 blocks to the width, giving you a quilt that is 45x56. |
i vote for option B also
. Go for B!
I guess I'm the contrary one again! I'd do A. Right now I have a skinny quilt on the couch - it's about that same size. I wish I had made it shorter as it's just odd.
The quilt we made for Emmaline is 45" square. She is 20 months old and it still fits her fine. I vote for the square.
B....square
I would go with B.
I vote for B also....Don't forget to post a photo when you finish !!!!
I vote for either A or the "D" version GingerK mentioned. I am not a huge fan of square quilts. But, that is only me. I usually will avoid a square pattern or alter it to make it rectangle.
It all depends on the friend. How well do you like this person? If it is more of an acquaintance you had to make a quilt for, go with C. If you like them pretty well, go with A. If this is a person who would come to your rescue in the middle of the night, go with B.
I would go with B but I like the suggestion of GingerK.
Go for option B if it doesn't mess up your pattern too much.

Thanks everyone. The recipient is an old friend from college. We haven't seen another since my wedding three years ago,but he was of the night rescuing variety at one point. I really like option D. I will have to see if have enough fabric left. Otherwise, I will make it square.
Thanks again! |

IMHO, I would leave as is and have one larger Panel on side and put the childs name on it. ( if you know the name). Kids LOVE their names on their quilts. This quilt for my grandson was like yours, but adding his name on the side gave me the width and he loves it.
There are so many ways you can make it wider. You can remove rows and add larger lattice, or just add an extra border only on the sides. There are no rules do what ever you want. I actually do prefer a rectangle over a square. That's quite large for a baby quilt, hopefully it is not too babyish and they can use it for many years. Good luck!
I would pull a few rows off and add them to the back or make a pillow or a diaper bag or something. A square would be my second choice.
I would go for option B
I would go for B
I would do b
I guess I would either go square 36x36 with a border or just go square 45x45. I have a baby quilt on my wall at the moment that got out of control and is now 45 " square and I would not change the size at all. It work with the patterns and little babies, don't stay little. They turn in to toddlers that can use a larger quilt for snuggling in. Hope to see a picture soon. BTW, I was an English major and I stumble with math too :o but quilting has helped!

When I come up with a problem like that I try to make use of any scraps I might have adding a small border of coins (what I call them) to the sides to add width. Here's a pic of one I did this too. On another I just added scraps to add length/width to the quilt.
I would add an extra border on the sides to increase the width.
The charity quilts we do for the children's hospital are all 39x39 finished - 5x5, 5" blocks with a border. go with the square #2 option.
I'm with most of the rest here...."Option B". A square will go from a crib to a lap, easily....:)
Me too for B

I would add borders to the sides. I hate ripping.
I think B would be the better option, so even though it may be more squared, it's a great size for baby to play on the floor with it, or a nice size for a cuddle quilt.
I was an English major for a reason so I feel your pain. I like baby quilts to be square because when they are laid on the floor for baby to play on, it works out best-- JMHO.
Another vote for B, I just made a square baby quilt about that size-on purpose! LOL It looks good.
I also vote for B with some cute borders.
Option A is my choice because I like rectangular quilts. But option B is another good choice. froggyintexas
