Are there any other mathmatically challenged quilters out there. I was so bummed yesterday.. I cut some fabric and of course it ended up not being the size I want. I did realize that it was my cutting and not the math.. I have to give kudos to my friend Pam for her skills with the adding, if it wasn't for her and my "Lovin' Man" I would be so pitiful! What do you do to help with your calculations on a quilt?

LMBO I LOOK it up! We are going to have to change your name to Silly Monkey!
|
I say un-intelligible things.

I am not mathematically challenged but I have cut fabric wrong before. The rule there is that it is usually the last piece and I have no more to fix the mistake. Time to get creative. If you know that your challenge is the math I'd suggest to write down all the steps (or measurements) and use a calculator.
It is always a good idea to do a test block too. |
I have one of those quilt calculators but it looks so daunting!

I know how to do the math, but if I do it too quickly, I am prone to mistakes. More times than I like to think of, I have done a quick mental math and then made a block, and thought "Why isn't it as big as the others", and realized I calculated something wrong. Seam allowances, usually.
If I think about how much fabric this has cost me, I might cry. :( |
I ask my smart husband to help and he asks his smart wife how to spell things. We are a perfect pair :D
|
okay that is what it is Sue.. he asks me to spell and I ask him to add! you are right.. perfect pair!
|
Paper and pencil and sketch it out, or go to my EQ program :D:D:D

I am not technically math challenged. However, geometry is my nemesis. I am not visual-spacial. Algebra and I are best buds. I will make the pattern out of paper (I draw the dashed seam lines on it too, yes I'm a tad anal at times). Cut out the pieces on the actual cutting lines. I glue the pieces onto a whole sheet of some sort of paper on the seam line only, assembling the block like I would if it were cloth. This has saved me from a couple really expensive mistakes on misreading instructions especially trying to understand where to square block segments, etc.
Now when I grow up, maybe I will get to use a grown-up glue stick. Right now I just use one I grabbed from the school supply section of the grocery store. Oh yeah, post-it glue sticks are my friend too. |
Funny, I am completely math challenge but I just 'have at it'& it all works out. I guess you would say that I am visual-spacial....or just "special" maybe :-) When I buy fabric I have no idea what I need, I just look at it & say whatever I think might work. Sometimes I have a little extra but that goes into my stash, sometimes I have a few orphan blocks but it beats thinking too hard. LOL!!!

I always say I'll take 3 yards of that and that and that!!! I hope it is enough for a top, Who plans for the back and borders and bindings? I have NO idea!!
|
I am SO numericaly challenged! I cant even remember my phone number. it figures I married a finacial analyst. to bad he knows nothing of quilting or he may actually understand what I need him to calculate for me :D
so Im on my own I have a large notebook to make sure the math is correct. and I buy extra fabric. |

i do alot of that at myself :D |
Geometry is the only subject I had to repeat in summer school.
Never made sense to me. :D I still don't know how I passed. |
I think mine was a pity grade.
|
I won one of those stupid calculators years ago, still in the package!! 3 yard of this and 3 yards of that and that have served me well! It also makes the stash sit up and take notice.

Quilt U classes are the greatest bargain you can find. Each class has a discussion forum where you can ask questions of classmates and the instructor, the price can't be beat, and Dean Crain can explain anything so that you understand it (I've taken one of her other classes). There's a free class on Borders that will give you a taste of how they work. |

I saved that site and well check into it later. I am a buy lots of yardage kind of person too. There are a few times I have "bit it" on that too.. lol!
|
My LQS loves me -- they tell me how much fabric I'll need for this or that and I tell them to always cut at least an extra yard in case I mess up
|
Buy fabric--choose pattern latter, worry about backing at a later date. Theresse

Before I started quilting I had made 2 sets of Scrubs for my niece who is an RN, I remember hearing my husband ask (Do you need that much material!) well it ended up I didn't but it left me a good amount to use in my quilt.
Pretty smart thinking huh? I didn't have a clue. I had a pattern that told me how much to buy for each piece. |
