The new Janome HOrizon has an 11" throatplate and is wonderful for quilting.

The Horizon Memory Craft 7700QCP unites years of Janome innovation in the most advanced and comprehensive sewing and quilting machine ever. 11" x 4.7" of work space makes it the largest machine in its class, and features like AcuFeed and the Superior Plus Feed System ensure accurate operation. Innovative needle plate markings give extra precision guidance and the Automatic Plate Converter allows push-button conversion to a Straight Stitch Needle Plate for quilt piecing and free motion work. The Horizon offers a range of advanced features to open up new possibilities for your creativity.

Don't you wish you could order a machine just the way you want it. Deep throat, 20 stitches, heavy motor, etc.... The Horizon is nice but PRICEY, so a reasonable price would be nice too.

I really haven't done much but play around with it...now that the holidays are over I'll start playing more with it.

The Singer 301 has a pretty big opening but I'm not sure exactly how big.

My Singers 301a measures 7.25 inches... Not much bigger than what she has. I'd check on the Juki TL98Q - strickly a straight stitch machine with a reverse and cutting thread option for quilters. Maybe $600-700 price range now or even less if yo'd look for a trade-in model.

I got my ruler out and measured - from needle across to closest edge of harp.
