The Juki TL98QE and the Bernina 440 are both regular sewing machines and they have a longer throat. They are cheaper than the Pfaff Expressions 2.0, Pfaff Creative 4.0, and Janome Horizon, all of which also have the longer throat area.

The Elna 7100 and Janome 1600P-DBX seem to have a higher vs. longer throat area.

I'd keep an eye out on Craigslist and also Ebay. Ebay especially is a good way to track prices. Also, a lot of the times you can find these machines for sale by dealers throughout the US, often with free shipping.

I wonder why they can't invent a quilting sewing machine? They invent all this other stuff? Wonder who we could ask?LOL

If you want a much less expensive machine than a Janome, check out White's Quilt 'n Sew. Less than 200 and has a wider opening specifically for quilting.

My Viking Saphire has a 10" and I love to quilt with it.

Brother has several models with at least 9 inches and I think their quilter may be 11 inches

I think the Pfaff is also only 9". You need to also consider the "height" of the throat - some are only 4 - 5" while others are 7".

The new machines are great "if" you can afford them...But I'm with you something you can find cheaper ...LOL

My Husqvarna Viking 875 Quilt has 9 7/8" of space to the right of the needle.

my Pfaff Creative Vision has a 10 inch throat. Really makes a difference!
