Would you consider the pieces of fabric in the attached picture to be scraps, crumbs or trash?
Are they realistically useable? I am on tight budget and dont want to waste anything.

Thanks for your input.

Too small for my use.

lvaughan 01-02-2011 02:05 PM

I would consider them trash, but want to see what others have to say. I may need to start saving more scraps.

amma 01-02-2011 02:05 PM

I save small pieces, but those are even too small for me :D:D:D

gale 01-02-2011 02:06 PM

bigger pieces than that go in my trash.

deema 01-02-2011 02:08 PM

I use pieces that size in Barbie and baby doll pillows for my daughter. I couldn't...or wouldn't actually use them to sew.

Lori S 01-02-2011 02:08 PM

I save small pieces ..but those would be in my trash.

cjk 01-02-2011 02:08 PM

for me they are trash.

gypsyquilter 01-02-2011 02:09 PM

oh gosh, I'd go blind looking at those. I'd agree, trash for certain!

Raggiemom 01-02-2011 02:10 PM

Trash.

Texasjunebug 01-02-2011 02:10 PM

I would save them in a special box. I am also an oil painter. If you have interest in designing and making art quilts, these tiny scraps are just like the last dab of paint to complete a painting. Something you would never make a trip to a store to get. There's a use for just about anything these days. The key is to have an idea, and follow through with it. You can use your quilt color experience to make a beautiful fabric "painting."

I see you're in Texas - go for it, girl! That's just me - I recycle glass jars to hold leftovers in the refrigerator too!

Flying_V_Goddess 01-02-2011 02:15 PM

That would be to small for me. But I've heard of quilters saving the really small scraps to make dog pillows. Its really up to you.

BellaBoo 01-02-2011 02:16 PM

Trash to me. If I saved them I know I'd never use them.

I have to admit I would say trash also. Will attach 2 pics of what I do with my small pieces and some of them are quite little. When I square up a side, sometimes the pieces get cut off so they were bigger to begn with but looks like I used tiny pieces when I didn't start out that way.

bibliostone 01-02-2011 02:23 PM

They would be trash to me, but I have seen paper piecing patterns that use tiny scraps like that. I had a friend give me a bookmark shaped like a Christmas stocking with a snowman on it, and it had some extremely tiny pieces. Think of a carrot nose!

AliKat 01-02-2011 02:28 PM

Do you like doing art style projects [like putting small pieces under tulle or such and sewing over it all for a specific collage effect] or using the Snippets technique? If you do then save them.

The smaller pieces I don't save I collect in a plastic bag and then give them to someone who makes pet beds for the Humane Society. My local Humane Society even has it's own sew/quilt group.

I don't use them but save them for a person that does cats and dogs' beds. For that I even save the threads I cut when sawing.

auntmag 01-02-2011 02:34 PM

same here.

Way too small for me. Trash.

kathdavis 01-02-2011 03:00 PM

Trash!

Candace 01-02-2011 03:03 PM

Trash.

koko 01-02-2011 03:08 PM

They look too small for me but if I was working on small applique I might rethink keeping the large pieces

featherweight 01-02-2011 03:12 PM

To darn little for me to mess with. Would waste more thread to sew them together then they are worth.

phatquilts 01-02-2011 03:19 PM

My limit is 1.5" for scrap patches. Then they go into a bag for quilting gals who collect threads and crumbs for the animal shelter's mats.

Izaquilter 01-02-2011 03:20 PM

too small for me

quiltbugs 01-02-2011 03:31 PM

I would trash them, too.

I say trash, but then I throw lots bigger scraps away. If I can't use them immediately I trash them. Too many scraps already. I am not THAT hardup.

Deb watkins 01-02-2011 03:45 PM

Trash. But I do have a scrap bag for this size, I use them to stuff my decorative pillows.

nativetexan 01-02-2011 03:47 PM

trash. i used to save almost everything but my sewing room became over run with too much stuff.

isnthatodd 01-02-2011 03:48 PM

Trash.

I wouldn't use them either, but there are a lot of people on this board that ARE hardup for small pieces especially those that use them to stuff pet beds or pillows with. I save the small pieces and offer them on the FREE or Donation posts for the cost of postage or find a group LOCALLY that could use them for this purpose, MHO!!!

Jim's Gem 01-02-2011 05:00 PM

Too small for me too.

dunster 01-02-2011 05:02 PM

I have a special bin in the sewing room for scraps that small. When I accumulate enough, I take them to one of the local quilt guilds. They say this is for the "bale". I have to admit I don't know exactly where this fabric goes, but I do know that it gets recycled.

beachlady 01-02-2011 06:52 PM

The only thing I could think of is paper piecing, but even then they might be too small.

jaciqltznok 01-02-2011 07:31 PM

sorry everyone, but they are NOT trash...
great for stuffing pillows, pin cushions, toys, etc...
great for paper piecing,
great for foundation piecing into the scrappy blocks like the other lady showed,
great for SNIPPET quilts,

I never see trash in fabric I paid good money for!

ps, when in doubt throw it out for the birds to line their nests with!

makakehau 01-02-2011 10:37 PM

Ohmygosh! Thanks for the great ideas!

I'm going to stash all of my little crumb-letts in their own space until I decide exactly what to do with them...
I love the idea of giving to the humane society for animal beds, using for tiny paper piecing (should I ever get that good - lol) or just donating to a quilters guild.
I asked for everyone's opinion and surely do respect them all. This is such an awesome place to hang out.

Have a great Monday, folks!
Lori

pookie ookie 01-02-2011 10:46 PM

Most of then look like the size I use with 2" blocks.

Annaquilts 01-02-2011 10:57 PM

trash, filler for stuff or a little kid can glue them on paper to quilt Curious what others say.

Jim 01-03-2011 12:23 AM

I dont save anything less than a 2 inch square...so would already be in my trash
