mending a quilt with squares needing a whole new piece
How do you go about mending a quilt that has been hand quilted! It has squares that need new fabric added to it. I do not know how to hand quilt and really do not want to start so that's a problem right off the top! Any suggestions out there!

If you don't want to do it yourself, Is there someone you can pay to fix/restore it for you? Check with a local guild for referrals.

No, it's really not an option to pay someone else to do this! I called her wondering if she was going to donate it to charity after spending time fixing it. It is very sentimental to her so she does want it fixed. It was made by her husband's grandmother and that side of the family is very highly valued! The only pieces that need to be replaced are the background fabric! So any different fabric will stand out! just my luck! I'm in a real pickle!

I had to repair a quilt I had made for my niece after the dog chewed a hole. Machine pieced and hand quilted. Fortunately I had leftover fabric from that quilt to replace the pieces. I removed the quilting from several inches around the chewed spot. Sewed the patch to match the pattern where needed. From the back side, hand-sewed the patch into place on the top. Got a scrap of batting and tacked that into place. Made a patch for the backing and hand sewed that into place. The hand quilting was of an overall design so just got my template out, lined up with the existing quilting and requilted that portion. By the time it was done it was virtually impossible to find the patch.

The best way is to find a similar fabric your are replacing and applique the square over the damage area. I would go to your LQS if you have one nearby and they could show you the best way of getting the repair done.
