That is beautiful. Where did you find that pattern. There is a method to do inset circles by machine using freezer paper. I don't know how to explain it. I can't search for the tutorial right now. I think it is by Dale Flemming. There is also one called the 6 minute block or the 6 minute circle or something like that

Depending on purpose, you could keep it a circle. I have seen some circle quilts

I really like the rainbow appearance. The challenge for finishing your dahlia will be to insure its roundness and not distort it. I personally think that might be quite a challenge. Be sure to show us the finished project.
